BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Originally the first four were grouped as "BRIC" (or "the BRICs"), before the induction of South Africa in 2010.

16 years ago, Jim O’Neill, the former chief economist for Goldman Sachs, coined the term BRIC in a paper entitled “Building Better Global Economic BRICs”. In late 2010, South Africa joined the group, adding an “S” to the acronym. The name would prove to carry a lot more weight as time went on.
