READING COMPREHENSION
TEXT A
When television is good, nothing—not the theatre, not the magazines, or newspapers—is better. But when television is bad, nothing is wor. I invite you to sit down in front of your television t when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, or anything el to distract you and keep your eyes glued to that t until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will obrve a vast wasteland. You will e a procession of game shows, violence, audience participation shows, **edies about totally unbelievable families, mayhem, more violence, sadism, murder, Western bad men, Western good men, private eyes, gangsters, still more violence and cartoons. And, endlessly, commercials that scream and sweet-talk and offend. And most of all, boredom. True, you wi
ll e a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, try it.
Is there no room on television to teach, to inform, to uplift, to stretch, to enlarge the capacities of our children? Is there no room for a children's news show explaining something about the world for them at their level of understanding? Is there no room for reading the great literature of the past, teaching them the great traditions of freedom? There are some fine children's shows, but they are drowned out in the massive dos of cartoons, violence, and more violence. Search your conscience and e whether you cannot offer more to your young beneficiaries who future you guard so many hours each and every day.

There are many people in this great country, and you must rve all of us. You will get no argument from me if you say that, given a choice between a Western and a symphony, more people will watch the Western. I like Westerns and private eyes, too, but a steady diet for the whole country is obviously not in the public interest. We all know that
people would more often prefer to be entertained rather than stimulated or informed. But your obligations are not satisfied if you look only to popularity as a test of what to broadcast. You are not only in show business: you are free to communicate ideas as well as give relaxation. You must provide a wider range of choices, more diversity, and more alternatives. It is not enough to cater to the nation's whims—you must also rve the nation's needs. The people own the air. They own it as much in prime evening time as they do at 6 o'clock in the morning. For every hour that the people give you, you owe them something. I intend to e that your debt is paid with rvice.

"Dumb and Dumber", one of the modern classics of **edy, tells the story of an affable idi
ot, Lloyd Christmas, who falls in love with a classy beauty, Mary Swanson. In one scene he asks her the chances of "a guy like you and a girl like me" ending up together. The answer is "Not good". "Not good like one out of a hundred?" asks Lloyd. "More like one out of a million," Mary replies. Lloyd paus for a moment, then shoots back, "So you're telling me there's a chance?"
That is the American spirit. Americans have traditionally been much more optimistic than Europeans, and happier too. They believe that people determine their own destinies rather than being the mere playthings of fate. They also believe that their children will have a better life than they do.
This helps to explain the dynamism of the American economy. Americans regard failure—even bankruptcy—as a stone in the road rather than a damning verdict. It also helps to explain the appeal of the American experiment. "The American, by nature, is optimistic," JFK once said. "He is experimental, an inventor and a builder who builds best when called upon to build greatly." Europeans ask, "Why?" Americans ask, "Why not?"

But the past five years have produced a dramatic souring in the country's mood. Three- quarters of Americans now think that the country is "on the wrong track". The number of people who are hostile to trade and immigration has rin sharply, as has the number who think that America should engage less in world affairs. Trust in government is half what it was in 2001. Both the president and Congress have bargain-bament approval ratings. And people are increasingly pessimistic about the future. Barely a third thinks that their children will be better off than they themlves are. The reason why the man with the message of hope, Barack Obama, and the man who hails from Hope, Mike Huckabee, are doing so well is that people think hope is in short supply.
