Passage 1
In almost every big university in the United States, football is a favorite sport. American fo
otball is different. Players sometimes kick the ball, but they also throw the ball and run with it. They try to take it to the other end of the field. They have four chances to move the ball ten yards. They can carry it or they can throw it. If they move the ball ten yards, they can try to move it another ten yards. If they move it to the end of the field, they receive six points.
It is difficult to move the ball. Eleven men on the other team try to stop the man with the ball. If he does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball to the other team. Each university wants its own team to win. Many thousands of people come to watch. They all shout for their favorite team.
Young men and women come on the field to help the people shout more. They dance and jump while they shout. Each team plays ten or eleven games each ason. The ason begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the ason ends. The best teams play again on January 1, the first day of the New Year. Passage 2
A foreigner’s first impression of the U. S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush—often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, eking attention in a store, and elbowing (推、挤) others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.
Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be rved and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.
You also find drivers will be abrupt (粗鲁的) and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is becau people value time highly, and they rent (讨厌) someone el “wasting” it beyond a certain courtesy (礼仪) point.
The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not左侧腹痛 a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fu.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return,be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Tho coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life.
