小学生英语美文:真正的高贵
In a calm a every man is a pilot.
But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.Take the lot of the happiest ,it is a tangled yarn.Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blesd by turns. Even death itlf makes life more loving. Men come clost to their true lves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.
In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as lf-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.
I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more riously within begins to live more simplywithout. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.
To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous lf.
小学生英语美文:一位母亲写给世界的信
A Mother's Letter to the World
Dear World:
My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for a while. And I wishyou would sort of treat him gently.
You e,up to now,he’s been king of the roost. He‘s been boss of the back yard.I havealways been around to repair his wounds, and to soothe his feelings.
But now, things are going to be different.
This morning,he’s going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his greatadventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow. To live his life in the worldhe has to live in will require faith and love and courage.
So,World,I wish you would sort of take him by his young hand and teach him the things hewill have to know.Teach him―but gently,if you can.Teach him that for everyscoundrel, there is a hero;that for everycrooked politician there is a dedicated leader;thatfor every enemy there is a friend.Teach him the wonders of books.Give him quiet time toponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun,and flowers on the greenhill.Teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.Teach him to have faith in his ownideas, even if everyone el tells him they are wrong.Teach him to ll his brawn and brains tothe highest bidder, but never to put a price on his heart and soul.Teach him to clo his earsto a and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right.Teach himgently,World, but don’t coddle him, becau only the test of fire makes fine steel.
This is a big order,World, but e what you can do.He‘s such a nice little fellow.
小学生英语美文:科学与艺术
I beg leave to thank you for the extremely kind and apprieciative manner in which you havereceived the toast of science. It is the more grateful to me to hear that toast propod in anasmbly of this kind. Becau I have noticed of late years a great and growing tendencyamong tho who were once jestingly said to have been born pre-scientific age to look uponscience as an invading and aggressive force, which of it had find its own way, it would oustfrom the univer all other pursuits. I think there are many persons wholook upon the newbirth of our times as a sort of monster rising out of the a of modern thought withthepurpo of devouring the Andromeda of art.And now and then a Perus, equipped with theshoes of swiftnessof the ready writer, and with the cap of invisibility of the editorial article, andit may be with the Medusa head of vituperation, shows herlf ready to try conclusions with thescientific dragon. Sir, I hope that Perus should think better of it. First, for the sake of hisown, becau the creature is hard of hea
d,strong of jaw,for some time past has shown a greatcapacity for going over and through whatever comes in his way; and condly, for the sake ofjustice, for I assure you, of my own personal knowledge if left alone, the creature is a verydebonair and gentle monster. As for the Andromeda of art, the creature has the tenderestrespect for the lady, and desires nothing more than to e her happily ttled and annuallypruducing a flock of such charming children as tho we e about us.
But putting parables aside, I am unable to understand how any one with a knowledge ofmankind can imagine that the growth of science can threaten the development of art in any ofits forms. If I understand the matter of all, science and art are the obver and rever ofthe Nature's medal; the one expressing the external order of things, in terms of feeling, andthe other in terms of thought. When men no longer love norhate; when suffering caus nopity, and the tale of great deeds ceas to thrill. when the lily of the field shall em no longermore beautifully arrayed than the Solomon in all his glory, and the owe has vanished from thesnow-capped peak and deep ravine, and indeed the science may have the world to itlf, butitwill not be becau the monster has devoured t
he art, but becau one side of human natureis dead, and becau men have lost half of their ancient and prent attributes.
