Peggy Whitson’s job demands a daily two-hour workout in a gym where weight has no meaning and the view changes at 17,000 miles an hour.
Whitson makes it look easy. At 57, she is the oldest woman to fly in space, breaking the record last November when she began her third long-term stay at the International Space Station. After returning home in September, 2017, the NASA astronaut felt matter-of-fact about the age milestone(里程碑).
“It wasn’t a record I was eking out,” Whitson said. “I was 42 and 48 for my first two space flights. I feel lucky that I was able to get to do another one in my 50s. I don’t think people should let age discourage them, even on tho jobs that require some amount of physical fitness. The oldest man is John Glenn (at 77), but we’ve had male astronauts in their 60s b
efore, so it’s just a matter of time before women started flying in space at this age.”
On Earth, she stays fit by weightlifting, biking, playing basketball and water skiing. She shared what it's like to live in micro-gravity: “It’s like you’re in a swimming pool, but you don’t have to worry about breathing. If I push off from one side, I’m going to float to the other side. Every direction feels exactly the same, which is really hard for your brain to grasp, but it’s amazing how fast you adapt.
It’s a big shock for the body to come back to Earth — everything is so heavy. We spend a lot of time getting ud being back in gravity again. Back pain was really the most dramatic for me this time. For me, coming home is way harder than going up into space.”

Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That's right― during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin.
But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something
was off was the man who sprinted past them. "Running at an amazing pace," Cassidy told Runner's World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!"
At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物)in a backyard.
No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they'd en the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row hou, they were in for a surpri. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site—and was hiding behind a bush by that very hou. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush ... and right into the arms of campus police, who'd joined the cha shortly behind the runners.
The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand th
