Liberal Arts Education is More Important than Vocational Education
Morally, economically, practically Definition:
Originally, the liberal arts is a Latin term, refers to the skills that were considered esntial for a free person to take an active part in civic life, something that included participating in public debate, defending onelf in court, rving on juries, and most importantly, military rvice. Grammar, rhetoric, and logic were the core liberal arts, while arithmetic, geometry, the theory of music, and astronomyalso played a (somewhat lesr) part in education.[2]
Liberal arts education is a term that can be interpreted in different ways. It can refer to certain areas of literature, languages, art history, music history, philosophy, history, mathematics, psychology, andscience.[3] It can also refer to studies on a liberal arts degree
program. For example, Harvard University offers a Master of Liberal Arts degree, which covers biological and social sciences as well as the humanities.[4] For both interpretations, the term generally refers to matters not relating to theprofessional, vocational, or technical curricula.
As the given definition describes, the liberal arts education is an education which covers all kinds of esntial training that a civic( a real person) requires. It is a general education. It is an education which includes many specified education, such as vocational training. Today, we are talking about which one is of greater importance. And our team think that liberal arts education is more important than vocational training, for a very simple reason: we, as human, are pursuing to be better and better. The difference of vocational training and liberal arts education is the difference between the narrow and broad, dark and bright. With vocational training, the road ahead

of you gonna be narrower and narrower, and no way out. With liberal arts education, y
ou are equipped with the generalized qualities that a man should have, and your way would be broader. A prosperous future.
Vocational training restrained
1. We Chine students are told to have all-round development in moral, intelligence, sports, aesthetic and labor and some other aspects. We have been acknowledging the importance and necessity of this general education for many years and will continue it. We have to admit that the vocational training has its advantages, but it focus on the specified skills only. This career-oriented training is short-sighted compared to the liberal arts education. The qualities the 21st society needs are critical thinking, management skills, which are the needs that vocational training couldn’t meet, but only liberal arts education could.
2. In this junior year, we are faced with the problem that either choo to have a further study to become a graduate or choo to work after the first year graduation. One day, Prof. Wang asked a question that why you choo to have the graduate study. If your aim
is to have a certificate, you’d better quit the study. Yeah, what is your goal? Make money? To live a better life? So, you think vocational training is a better and quicker way to get all this? But, what then? After you’ve received the medicine training, you’ve got the enough skills your job requires, you would find that there is nothing left. What you’ve lost is far less than what you’ve got. The broad education offer us the chance to know more about politics, humanities languages which are helpful to broad your horizon, not narrow-minded. You know little about the history of your country, you can hardly e things diachronically, which make it impossible for you to have a wide-ranged rearch to your profession.
Economically, let’s weigh the importance or the value of each education. From vocational training, what you got is the career-oriented skills of certain subject. But the liberal arts education is to teach us to have the eye of discovering, to have the ability to adapt to this multidimensional society, to

obtain the knowledge for the jobs known or unknown. You may save a lot of money and time through vocational training, but the knowledge you’ve got is limited and you are poor in soul. Humanities and other good qualities you’ve got through liberal arts education is priceless, are luxuries that can’t be weighed in money, and will offer great benefits for a life-long time.
We are not paying no attention for the practical things for the future. On the contrary, we pay much more. We are warning people not to save little but lo a lot. Critical thinking, writing and analysis that are necessary for success, which is also the practical knowledge that couldn’t get from vocational training. What we have to train our people is the capability to develop and compete with elites from western countries and thus become more influential in the international society. That is the all-round development, the improvement of comprehensive qualities.
In the last, a person who work hard is not always to succeed, but a successful person is must hardworking. The same rule applies to this, a person who has tho necessary q
ualities for success is not always succeed, but the person who succeed must have tho qualities that the liberal arts education cultivated, not the special skills.
