An Instruction to English Language T eaching (ELT)
Methodology
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Greeting & Self-introduction & Warm-up activity (V-sir)
Questions: 1.Who am I?
2) What am I?
3) What am I dong now?
4) Who are you? (Name list with English names)
5) What are you?
6) What are you doing now?
7) What will it be most likely that you would become after you graduate
from university?
II. The Concept of Methodology
1.All the students here should get ready to be a teacher after your graduation. So we are going to be on the same boat. And so we should make good preparations for our future teaching. Then we should know something about EL T Methodology. Here I have some more questions for you to think about.
Question 1:
What is Methodology and what aspect does it cover?
Ref. Introduction (Ss: brainstorm)
If you want to be a real Christian, you must be familiar with the Bible. EL T Methodology can be a bible for a language teacher.
It is a cour in English Language Teaching.
It may help you to become a good language teacher.
It is aimed at introducing some teaching theories and practical methods to English teachers.
It deals with language and language learning and teaching.
It provides with knowledge of lesson planning and classroom management.
It focus on the teaching of language components; that is, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
It also focus on the teaching of the four language skills; that is, listening, speaking, reading and writing.
It shows how the language components and skills are taught and practiced in and
out of the classroom.
It is about language asssment
It introduces the urs of the book to the evaluation, lection and adaptation of textbooks and so on.
It also shows how teachers will be able to integrate the areas, language components and the teac
hing of the four language skills (or five: plus translation).
So this cour can be a very uful and helpful for a tomorrow teacher. But to be honest, sometimes it also can be such a cour that could be a little tiresome and troublesome for the learners, especially for tho who are not ready to be a teacher, even if it can’t be avoided becau of your fate or your major.
And I hope we will try our best to make it more practical and interesting for us to study. And I also expect you can benefit something from this cour which will contribute much to your teaching practice, career and your future.
But I don’t mean that you can be a top teache r if you can study this cour very well becau teaching can be quite complex in both practice and theory. That’s why some of you wouldn’t like to be a teacher and I don’t think it right to be angry with you. I just expect you to come here on time and put your heart into it while you are under this roof. Otherwi it will be dangerous and disastrous. Do you understand what I mean? And I will mean what I say.
2.Therefore, we may make a good study of this cour step by step from the very beginning of language learning.
Question 2:
Why are our children/people learning English?
Students’ possible answers (Group work / Bb)
They have to pass the examinations.
They can help foreign visitors.
It’s necessary if they want to enter university.
Learning a foreign language is an intellectual challenge.
They can u computers more easily.
They need to keep in touch with what is going on in their profession worldwide. English will be very important to get a job in trade.
English will be uful for them to travel abroad.
They will be able to read and listen to in English. This can improve their knowledge of the world.
Can you add any more to the list?(pair work) And put the items into order from the most important one to the least important one.
Of cour, there are no right or wrong answers. But what they are doing in the English class is gaining skills that might help them in life, remember this!
3.Becau English is uful and important, we are learning it.
Question 3:
How do/did you study English?
Students’ possible answ ers (A group discussion & Bb)
Different students study in different ways. All roads lead to Rome/English. Question 4:
How was English taught in the past?
Before we go any further forward, let’s give ourlves the chance to look back, to e where we come from. Do you remember how you were taught English at school?
The following questions may help you to answer the former question.
1.What happened at the beginning of each lesson?
2.How did you have to prepare for the lesson?
3.How did you feel during your lesson?
4.What step did the teacher follow?
5.What did you & the teacher do in class?
6.How much homework did you have?
7.What did you enjoy most about your class?
Now recall or think about your classroom in the past and try to write a report about the answer to this question? →
After it, s tudents’ group work; tell others about the English class in the past.
Here is something that you should always keep in mind as a teacher:
Y our relationship with your students and with the subject you are teaching will always have an important effect on the students learning.
Traditional teaching situations:
Before the lesson, learn list of vocabulary with their Chine translation.
The teacher would come in, sit or stand, but rarely move away from the blackboar d. Read the text or the dialogue, maybe aloud after the teacher.

Is the aim of the class was communication? Clearly the aim of the class was not communicative at all. So next we should answer another question, which will help us to be clear about the aim of language teaching.
Question 5 Rrainstom

Bb: Language is a means of communication with other people.

Each class contains at least 3 parts:
1)Review learned language materials
2)Teach new language components: phonetics, vocabulary and grammar.
3)Carry out various forms of 4 skills’ activities.
3. The Integral Teaching Method
It is quite similar to th e communicative approach. In Unit 2, we’ll discuss it in detail and fully.
In a word, if we make a good study of all the teaching methods and make good u of their benefits/merits, we’ll be clearer about how to teach students language well and how to make language class more communicative.
