2. In an age when most Chine people thought that a lunar eclip (月食) was a sign of angry gods, Wang Zhenyi (1768-1797), an astronomer and mathematician who worked tirelessly to publish her discoveries about space, said, “Actually, it’s definitely becau of the Moon.”
Wang was born at a time when feudal (封建的) customs in China prevented girls from getting a formal education. However, she was fortunate that her family encouraged her in learning. Her grandfather, a former district governor, shared his knowledge of astronomy with her, while her father, a medicinal scholar, taught her basic math. Despite being denied formal education, Wang was determined to learn and became lf-taught, studying a vast collection of books on various subjects.
One of Wang’s most famous demonstrations involved creating a model to explain a lunar eclip. After consulting decades of astronomical records, she ud a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclip happened when the Moon pasd directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow. Her article The Explanation of a Lunar Eclip is still considered highly accurate for its time.
During the Qing dynasty, the Western calendar was introduced to China. Wang argued for its adoption becau it was bad on the movement of the Sun. Many Chine scholars rejected the idea for it had come from the West, to which Wang simply
re sponded, “What counts is the ufulness, no matter whether it is Chine or Western.”
To make math and science accessible to common people, she spent years publishing articles hoping to make the ancient and poorly understood concepts easier to digest. She explained the rotation (旋转) of the planets, and even the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理) for beginners.
Unfortunately, most of Wang Zhenyi’s works have not pasd the test of time, but her contributions continue to be recognized in modern times. In 1994, the International Astronomical Union named a c
rater (环形山) on Venus after her. Wang’s legacy continues to inspire and encourage future generations to pursue knowledge and innovation.”

3. Have you ever taken a lfie (自拍照) and thought, “Why do I look so weird (奇怪的)?” The reason may be becau photos show us the rever (相反) of what we e in the mirror. When we take a photo of ourlves using the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures our face as others e it. This can be a little weird becau
our faces are not perfectly symmetrical, and certain features don’t line up in photos the same way they do in the mirror.
In addition to the rever image issue, our tendency to like what we’re familiar with also plays a role. We are most familiar with our faces as we e them in the mirror, so we come to prefer that mirror image. According to the mere exposure theory, repeatedly encountering something makes us like it more. When we look at ourlves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side, or the angle that ems most attractive to us.
“You have that familiarity, which breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face,” said Pamela Rutledge, director of the Medi a Psychology Rearch Center.
New York-bad photographer Michael Levy expanded on Rutledge’s point. He noted that when we look at ourlves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side — that is, the angle that ems most attractive to us.
Furthermore, when we e our faces in the mirror, we are looking at ourlves in motion, as oppod to completely still in a photo. We tend to notice a lot more details in a still photo, and different camera lens and a person’s distance to the cam era can also change the way people look
in photos.
But ultimately, the way we appear in photos is the way we look to the rest of the world, and studies have shown that other people generally like the version of us they e, as oppod to the image we e o f ourlves. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. So go forth and lfie.
1. Why do people sometimes appear “weird” in lfies, according to the article? A.Becau lfies are often taken in bad lighting.
B.Becau they are not standing at the correct angle.
C.Becau lfies show a reverd image of the face.
D.Becau people tend to overthink their appearance in lfies.
2. According to the article, what is the mere exposure theory?
A.A theory about how people like what they e in the mirror.
B.A theory about how people prefer certain angles in photographs.
C.A theory about how people tend to focus on details in still photographs.
D.A theory about how repeated exposure to something makes people like it more.
3. What is the purpo of the text?
A.To provide tips for better lfies.
B.To Promoting lf-acceptance in photos.
C.To explain differences in appearance between photos and mirrors.
D.To explore factors behind preference for mirror images over photo images.
4. How does the author support his explanations for the phenomenon of why we look different in lfies and mirrors?
A.By providing statistical data and
graphs.
B.By comparing lfies and mirror images.
C.By using questions and persuasive language. D.By citing scientific studies and experts’ opinions.
4. We all follow pretty much the same pattern with any skill we learn, from baking a pie to writing a descriptive paragraph. We typically start with a general idea and receive instruction before practicing to reach an acceptable level of performance, and then let it become automatic. However, once we reach this point, we often stop improving. People often misunderstand this becau they assume that their continued baking or writing is a form of practice and that they are bound to get better at it as long as they keep doing it.
Rearch has shown that additional years of “practice” may not lead to improvement and can even result in a decline in performance. So what do you need if you are not satisfied with this automated level of performance? Purpoful practice turns out to be a successful approach.
Purpoful practice has veral characteristics that t it apart from what we might call “naive practice, ” which is esntially just doing something repeatedly, and expecting that the repet ition alone will improve one’s performance.
First of all, purpoful practice has well-defined, specific goals. It is all about putting a bunch of baby
steps together to reach a longer-term goal.
Furthermore, purpoful practice involves feedback. You have to know whether you are doing something right and, if not, how you may be going about it the wrong way. Without feedback—either from yourlf or from outside obrvers—you cannot figure out what you need to improve on or how clo you are to achieving your goals.
Purpoful practice also requires getting out of one’s comfort zone, which means trying to do something that you couldn’t do before. This is perhaps the most important part of purpoful practice. Sometimes you may find it easy to accomplish that new thing, and then you keep pushing on. At other times, however, you run into something that stops you cold. The best way to get past any barrier is to come at it from a different direction, which is one reason why it is uful to work with a teacher or coach.
1. What is the author’s attitude towards aimless continued practice?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Unclear.
2. What does the word “naive practice” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Practice that involves specific goals and feedback.
B.Practice repeatedly will improve one’s performance.
