Chapter 1
Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent (壮观
的) picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval (原始的) forest.
It was a picture of a boa (巨蟒) constrictor in the act of swallowing (吞
咽) an animal.
Here is a copy of the drawing.
In the book it said: “Boa (巨蟒) constrictors swallow (吞咽) their prey (猎
物) whole, without chewing (咀嚼) it.
After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that t hey need for digestion (消化) .”

I pondered (思索) deeply, then, over the adventures (冒险) of the jungle (丛林) .
And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawi ng.
My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

I showed my masterpiece (杰
作) to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened (惊
吓) them.
But they answered: “Frighten (惊吓) ? Why should anyone be frightened (惊吓) by a hat?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat.
It was a picture of a boa (巨蟒) constrictor digesting (消化) an elephant.
But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,
I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa (巨
蟒) constrictor, so that the grown-ups could e it clearly.
They always need to have things explained.
My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
The grown-ups’ respon (反应) , this time, was to advi me to lay aside (在...旁边) my drawings of boa (巨
蟒) constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside,
and devote (致力于) mylf instead to geography, history, arithmetic (算
术) and grammar.
That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent (伟大的) career as a painter.
I had been disheartened (沮丧
的) by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two.
Grown-ups never understand anything by themlves, and it is tiresome for child ren to be always and forever (永远) explaining things to them.
So then I cho another profession (职业) , and learned to pilot airplanes (飞机) .
I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very uful to me.
At a glance (一瞥) I can distinguish (区
分) China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In the cour of this life I have had a great many encounters (邂
逅) with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of conque nce (重要) .
I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have en them intimately (熟悉地) , clo at hand.
And that hasn’t much improved (提高) my opinion of them.
Whenever I met one of them who emed to me at all clear-sighted,
I tried the experiment (试
验) of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept.
I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding.
But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
Then I would never talk to that person about boa (巨
蟒) constrictors, or primeval (原始的) forests, or stars.
I would bring mylf down to his level.
I would talk to him about bridge, and golf (高尔夫
球) , and politics, and neckties (领带) .
And the grown-up would be greatly plead to have met such a nsible (通晓事理的) man.

所以这句话只是把then提前了，大家不要句子顺序一变就不认识了哈，这样会很影响阅读的～

而这一次，大人们的反应，是让我放下画蟒蛇的事，不管是画蟒蛇的外部图the outside
还是内部图

。
应该把心思放在学习地理，历史，算数和语法。
lay aside : 把…放在一边，深刻含义就是，大人劝作者说，不管从里面还是外面看，都不要再画了。
吃一个栗子：

a great many：很多
have an encounter with 遇到
great deal 修饰的是 lived 的年数，所以是：我和成年人在一起生活了很多年。matters of conquences 就是固定短语，指重要的事情
clo at hand：近在咫尺
...and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.
through表示持续的状态，从头至尾，所以在这里就是睡了整整六个月
I would bring mylf down to his level
bring down to his level自降格局
I have flown a little over all parts of the world .
这里的 A little 指的是差不多，接近，意思就是，我差不多飞遍了世界各地...and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explainingthings to the m.
to be doing表持续，意思是孩子们一直向大人解释东西，其实是很烦人的。Whenever I met one of them who emed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the ex periment of showing him my Drawing Num
ber One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding.
clear－sighted是视力好的意思，也可延伸为脑袋灵光
这一段中的两句话分别有一处语序调换。
第一句中，应该是who emed clear-sighted to me at all，对我来说看上去聪明的人
第二句中，应该把so提到I would try to find out之前，表示，我把画给他看了以后，就知道他究竟聪不聪明（能否看懂我的画）
所以这整段话的意思是说：每当我遇到一个to me（对我来说）emed（看上去）clear-sighted（聪明的人），我就会把画给他看。（为什么呢？因为我希望有人能看得懂我的画吖～）
