QUESTION (SPEECH – SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE)
Every year, your school holds an Open Hou at which talks are given to prospective pupils to attract them to study in the school. The Principal has asked you, as the Chairperson of the Student Council, to give a speech at this year’s Open Hou. Your audience is a diver group ranging in age from 12 to 15 that compris the following:
∙Pupils talented in the fine arts – they compo music, play various instruments and have been trained in both classical and contemporary dance. The pupils have also performed at public concerts both locally and overas.
∙Academically gifted pupils - they are very intelligent, highly creative and have won many prizes at Maths and Science competitions.
∙Pupils with sporting talent – they have participated in national competitions and include champions in swimming, basketball and athletics.
∙Pupils who are interested in Chine language and culture – they are competent in the Chine language and they have participated in veral cultural programmes organid by their school and the community.
∙Pupils from overas – they come mainly from China and are talented. They are bright and keen to learn but need extra support in English.
Write a speech that would appeal to all the groups of students. The aim of our speech is to persuade your audience that the school is able to meet their needs and aspirations, and that it is where they can develop their potential to the fullest. You want to convince them to come to your school and no other.
Your speech must cover the requirements of all five groups in detail.

SPEECH – OPEN HOUSE
Good morning teachers and fellow students.
Welcome to Everbright Secondary School. I am Joy, the chairperson of the Student Council and today, it gives me great pleasure to give you a brief insight of what our school can offer you if you join us next year.
Let me first talk about our academic excellence. You can e from the slides that our past 5 years “O” level results have been nothing but excellent. Our caring and dedicated teachers, together with the u of high tech methods of teaching have been successful.
95% of our students qualify for JC admission and the rate of distinction for each subject is above 80%. The breakdown for each subject can be en on the next slide. Don’t you agree that our students have performed well?
Our school rules are strict and the pupils are expected to behave well at all times. In Everbright, we turn girls into ladies and boys into gentlemen.
For tho of you who are highly creative and are interested in Mathematics and Science competitions, Everbright is the school for you to be in to shine further. Participating and winning prizes in Mathematics and Science competitions is a routine here. This year alone, in the Elements Life Science Competition, 6 out of 7 groups that participated were awarded the Gold medal. In the Maths Olympiad, 100 students took part and more than 70% of them were awarded distinction with honours.
For tho who are into languages and culture, our school stress a lot on bilingualism and culture. Our Mother Tongue Society organizes many different language and cultural programmes within the school and also for the community. In conjunction with mid-autumn festival, our school jointly organizes community celebrations with the grassroot community clubs yearly. Recently, some of our students also took part in the inter-school cross-talk competition in the North zone and emerged champions.
If your only problem is having some difficulty in English, have no worries. We have a pool of dedicated English teachers who will be able to e that you do not lag behind becau of the English Language. Remedial lessons will be conducted for tho who are weak and Enrichment class for the rest of the students.
Every student in Everbright is encouraged to strive for excellence, not only in the academics but also in CCAs and character development. We have a kaleidoscope of CCAs, including the fine arts and Sports. We have an outstanding Concert Band that just achieved a Gold Award in the recent SYF. Our Chine Orchestra, Modern Jazz and Chine Dance Groups were also awarded Gold in the recent SYF. All the groups mentioned have performed at public concerts and our Chine Dance Group has also performed overas.
