Review the main idea of the speech.
T: Hell o, everyone, nice to meet you! We’ve learned a speech given by a principal on the first day of term. Today we shall review the text, discuss how to u some of the words an
d phras, and practi using them in different situations.
T: Would you fill in the blanks according to what you have learned? Can you divide them into three parts? We call the first part introduction, the cond part body and the last part conclusion. Para. 1 A new ___________

Step 2 Building vocabulary
1.Word study: challenge
Introduce the meaning of challenge through different situations, first the context of the speech then other situations.
(1)Challenge as a noun
T: Look at the ntence from paragraph 2. What’s the meaning of challenge here?
A challenge is something new and difficult which requires great effort and determination. You can say your school life is full of challenges, or that your school life pos a challenge to you. Can you think of some other verbs that can be followed by challenge?
Think about the situation: if the workers are not paid on time, they will go on a strike. Can you translate the ntence: 罢工给政府带来了严峻的挑战。
(2)Collocations of challenge
T: Since challenges do exist. People have to face them, right? You can also take on or ac
cept them. That means you are ready to deal with the challenges. Then if you can successfully deal with them, you are able to meet them or ri to them. Would you plea read the following two ntences together?
Free talk: ask students to summarize different collocations of challenge and understand them in different contexts.
(3)C hallenge as a verb
T: Challenge can also be ud as a verb. If you challenge someone, you invite them to fight or compete with you in some way.
For example, 迈克要挑战我跟我下棋。How do you translate it into English?
As we know, nowadays, the relationship between parents and children is not like that of many years ago. Children challenge their parents’ autho rity (权威) far more nowadays than they did in the past. Can you translate this ntence? Another ntence: She challenged the newspaper to prove its story. Can you translate this ntence? What’s the
meaning of challenge here?
2.Word study: acquire
(1)Introduce the meanings of acquire in different contexts.
T: Have you got some skills from your parents? That is to say, you’ve acquired some skills. The principal says when you ri to the challenges, you will have the opportunity to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth. (para. 2) Acquire has two meanings: 1. to obtain sth by buying or being given it 2. (of skills or habits) to learn it or develop it through your daily life or experience.
I have two examples for you. The company has just acquired lots of new equipment. How long will it take to acquire the necessary skills? What’s the meaning of acquire in each ntence?
(2) Diction: acquire vs achieve
Acquire and achieve em similar to each other. Actually, they are quite different. Achieve means to successfully complete something or get a good result, especially by working hard. Then, what can you acquire and what can you achieve?
Pay attention to the ntence. What’s the meaning of acquisition? This is the noun form of acquire.
3.Word study: effort
(1)Create concrete contexts to further understand effort and learn to write with the phras related to effort.
T: Since you are facing a lot of challenges in the high school, you have to work hard, right? In other words, you are suppod to devote your effort to your schoolwork. Look at the ntence: I know you don’t like her, but plea make an effort to be polite. Can you u your own words to
tell us the meaning of effort? In writing, we can u the following phras: it takes effort to
do sth, make effort to do sth, spare no effort to do sth. Read
(2)Learn about the suffix -less in the word effortless.
T: Can you give an adjective to describe needing no or little effort? Would you translate the ntence?
