1.Introduction
Education is a sacred cau vital to the survival, development and civilization of mankind, for its mission is to make men. Being one devoted to this sacred cau, a teacher should be a person with a real n of commitment and responsibility. He should contribute his talents, ability and efforts to the job of a teacher. He should always prepare the lecture and plan the classroom activities carefully, try to understand the students’ knowledge level, difficulties, and unceasingly improve his teaching to suit and benefit the students so as to achieve optimum teaching result.
A teacher should not just read the textbook for students, while students should not listen to what a teacher said to them at the same time, then repeat what they have learned, and do some exerci from time to time. A teacher, therefore, should be one who enlightens the students to learn more than he does. In the teaching process, What a teacher say and do are very important for students to learn English well. However, what roles should a teacher play in the teaching process? To answer this question, I wrote this paper.
2.There are some problems in traditional English teaching.
The traditional English teaching is ineffective for Middle students to learn English well. On one hand. during the teaching process, teachers are always talking and explaining, while students just need to accept the knowledge which teachers tell them. After explanation of teachers, students should finish the exerci by themlves, but it does mean students grasp the knowledge. On the other hand, teachers does all the thinking and all the talking, but it is the students who should think and talk. What’s wor, the teacher soon get tired becau she or he is doing all work. Meanwhile, the students also get bored becau there is nothing they can do but listen to what the teacher said.
Instead of explaning, the teacher should creat some conditions that lead to learning. Active as the Middle students are, it is easy for the teacher to have activities to ri the interest of the students. The activities need students to think, qustion, answer, and do some group work, and they will make the class more active. As an old psychology professor ud to tell us “The mind remembers what the mind does.”
In business they say, “Nothing happens until颜体字帖
we make a sale”. In teaching it should say, “Nothing happens until the student do something”. The more active the student, the more learning that takes place. Letting people do things for themlves through using the language is more efficient than explaining it to them.
We allow learners to figure out as much of the dialog as possible before giving them the translations. In the teaching we should take this idea much further by adding exercis to get students thinking about the input more deeply.

The latest Cour Standards for middle school English teaching stipulates that teachers’ work is to motivate students’ interest in English, cultivate students’ n of success, guide students to form good learning habit, enable them to communicate smoothly and develop sound value towards learning and living. In order to meet the needs of new English curriculum, the teacher should change their traditional roles in the class, they should play different roles in English teaching. Bad on the functions the teacher performs in different activities, Harmer defines the teacher’s roles as controller, asssor, organir, prompter, participant and resource-provider(Harmer, 1983:201).
4.The roles of teachers in English class and their impact upon the learners.
4.1 Guide students to learn rather than telling everything for them.
In the process of education, the teacher should play the role of guides who is very important for students. As we know, the Middle students are so active that the teacher must make the whole class interesting and funny. During the time of class, guiding students to read is far better than explaining everything to them. Since Middle students are always curious about everything, they are willing to learn something by themlves rather than accepting everything through teachers’ telling. In a long term, students will get bored for the learning of English.
Teaching starts with guiding. Only under scientific and effective guidance, can students be organized effectively to take part in their learning process. Guidance is to be carried on in three steps:the first is guiding. Ever since students are enrolled into schools, students are trained in learning methods and habits. In this way, they will switch from the passive position to the initiative position so as to lay a solid foundation for further studies. Learning to u dictionaries is one of the most basic skills in English studies. Teachers sh
ould guide students to learn to look up new words in the dictionary. After learning new words, teacher should guide students how to preview new lessons. In traditional English teaching, students are always accustomed to accept what teachers tell them. They don’t think about what they have learnt, and don’t know how to u the knowledge. Therefore, during the preview of the new lesson, teachers should guide students to think and talk about the main idea of the new lesson. Through this way, students can share their opinions with their classmates, it is good for teacher to arou their interests. As we know, interest is the best teacher to learn.
