Ladies and Gentlemen
I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening
becau I have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower
tho signs plea? -- I have some very sad news for all of you and I think
sad news for all of our fellow citizens and people who love peace all over
the world; and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed
tonight in Memphis Tenne.
Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between
fellow human beings. He died in the cau of that effort. In this difficult
day in this difficult time for the United States it's perhaps well to ask
what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For
tho of you who are black -- considering the evidence evidently is that
there were white people who were responsible -- you can be filled with
bitterness and with hatred and a desire for revenge.
We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization
-- black people amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred
toward one another. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did
to understand and to comprehend and replace that violence that stain of
bloodshed that has spread across our land with an effort to understand
compassion and love.
For tho of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled
with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act against all white
people I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind
of feeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a white
man.

But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make
an effort to understand to get beyond or go beyond the rather difficult
times.
My favorite poem my -- my favorite poet was Aeschylus. And he once
wrote:
Even in our sleep pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart
until in our own despair
against our will
comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.
What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in
the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not
violence and lawlessness but is love and wisdom and compassion toward one
another and a feeling of justice toward tho who still suffer within our
country whether they be white or whether they be black.
So I ask you tonight to return home to say a prayer for the family
of Martin Luther King -- yeah it's true -- but more importantly to say
a prayer for our own country which all of us love -- a prayer for
understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.
We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've
had difficult times in the past but we -- and we will have difficult times
in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of
lawlessness; and it's not the end of disorder.
But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black
people in this country want to live together want to improve the quality

of our life and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.
And let's dedicate ourlves to what the Greeks wrote so many years
ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.
Let us dedicate ourlves to that and say a prayer for our country and
for our people.

I am very happy to participate in this English Summer Program becau
it helps me to improve my oral English.
Each day I arrive early for class; and sit in the first row which is
nearest to the teacher so that I can hear the teacher clearly.
I have attended every class, not misd a single one, only becau
I cherish this opportunity to learn to speak English well.
Our teacher is a wonderful teacher. She speaks English slowly and
clearly so that we can easily understand her. She tries hard to help us
with pronunciation, intonation and rhythm and teaches us to speak English
smoothly. She helps everyone with every difficult sound. She tells us
stories and teaches us life skills, which will be uful to us in the future.
She is very kind to us and we all love her.
In the beginning, many of our students were shy about standing up in
front of the class to speak English, but with the help of our teacher;
and with the encouragement of our teacher every one of our class can now

stands up and speak English loudly.
Our teacher ems not to be an expert on languages. She does not tell
us that the word “goodbye” originally means: ’god be with you’ or “god
bless you” when we are talking about the basic expressions of saying
goodbye. She does not tell us such things. She only teaches us every day
English to help us to communicate with others. And that is just what I
needed. So, this program has been very helpful to me. I hope there will
be more such programs in the future so that many more people can benefit
from it.
Now, I have a dream!
My dream is that one day I can go to America for a Chine Summer
program to teach Americans to speak Chine and tell them about China.
My dream is that Chine and Americans understand each other better,
will be good friends forever!

wrong choice but wonderful or boring life, which the process makes the

gump made no decision by and for himlf but he accomplished great success
with his strong will in the process. the process is not the road itlf
but the attitudes and feelings ,the caution, courage and persistance we
have as we encounter new experience and unexpected obstacles. take mylf
as an example, i changed my major when i became a postgraduate. after the
choice,days have been harsh for me.i cannot understand the new lessons
at all. for they are cloly related to mathmatics which i learned nothing
about before. however wuth the belief that this is the great chance for
me to experience new ideas and challenge mylf,i persisted. i asked for
help from every channel and reorgonized my life. gradually i could
understand some parts and even found maths er, i
learned to act instead of complaining. in retrospect,the choice left no
trace in my mind but the happiness and bitterness of the past four months
becomes an unforgetable experience in my life.

Ladies and Gentlemen I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report
on the state of the union but the events of earlier today have led me to
change tho plans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy
and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger.
We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This
is truly a national loss.
Nineteen years ago almost to the day we lost three astronauts in a

terrible accident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in
flight. We've never had a tragedy like this.
And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the
shuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dangers but
overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn ven heroes:
Michael Smith Dick Scobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka
Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe.
We mourn their loss as a nation together.
For the families of the ven we cannot bear as you do the full impact
of this tragedy. But we feel the loss and we're thinking about you so very
much. Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace
that special spirit that says "Give me a challenge and I'll meet it with
joy." They had a hunger to explore the univer and discover its truths.
They wished to rve and they did. They rved all of us.
We've grown ud to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us.
But for twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing
just that. We've grown ud to the idea of space and perhaps we forget
that we've only just begun. We're still pioneers. They the members of the
Challenger crew were pioneers.
And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who were
watching the live coverage of the shuttle's take-off. I know it's hard
to understand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part
of the process of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a
chance and expanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the
fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling
us into the future and we'll continue to follow them.
I've always had great faith in and respect for our space program. And

what happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don't hide our space
program. We don't keep crets and cover things up. We do it all up front
and in public. That's the way freedom is and we wouldn't change it for
a minute.
We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights
and more shuttle crews and yes more volunteers more civilians more
teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.
I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman who works
for NASA or who worked on this mission and tell them: "Your dedication
and professionalism have moved and impresd us for decades. And we know
of your anguish. We share it."
There's a coincidence today. On this day three hundred and ninety
years ago the great explorer Sir Francis Drake died aboard ship off the
coast of Panama. In his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans and
a historian later said "He lived by the a died on it and was buried in
it." Well today we can say of the Challenger crew: Their dedication was
like Drake's complete.
The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in
which they lived their lives. We will never forget them nor the last time
we saw them this morning as they prepared for their journey and waved
goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."

be very happy.
I hope I can speak English with everyone in the world. I'll introduce
China to them, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Anshan.
I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous
hard study, one day I can speak English very well.
If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So
I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too.

A Brother Like That

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother
as a Christmas prent. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office,
a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it.
Is this your car, Mister? he said.
Paul nodded. My brother gave it to me for Christmas. The boy was
astounded. You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn t cost you
nothing? Boy, I wish . . . He hesitated.
Of cour Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to
wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all
the way down to his heels. I wish, the boy went on, That I could be a brother
like that.
Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added,
Would you like to take a ride in my car?
Oh yes, Id love that.
After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, Mister,
would you mind driving in front of my hou?
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted
to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But
Paul was wrong again. Will you stop where tho two steps are? the boy
asked.
He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back,
but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother.
He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him
and pointed to the car.
There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave
it to him for Christmas and it didn t cost him a cent. And some day Im

gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can e for yourlf all
the pretty things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell
you about. Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front at of his car.
The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them
began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas Eve, Paul learned
what Jesus meant when he said: It is more blesd to give . . .
