ROMEO

Lady, by yonder blessèd moon I vow,

That tips with silver all the fruit-tree

tops—

JULIET

O, swear not by the moon, th'

inconstant moon,

That monthly changes in her circle

orb,

Lest that thy love prove likewi

ROMEO

What shall I swear by?

JULIET

Do not swear at all.

Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious

Which is the god of my idolatry,

And I’ll believe thee.

ROMEO

If my heart’s dear love—

JULIET

Well, do not swear. Although I joy in

thee,

I have no joy of this contract tonight.

ROMEO

What should I swear by?

JULIET

Don’t swear at all. But if you have to

swear, swear by your wonderful lf,

which is the god I worship like an idol,

and then I’ll believe you.

ROMEO

Lady, I swear by the sacred moon above,

the moon that paints the tops of fruit

trees with silver—

JULIET

Don’t swear by the moon. The moon is

always changing.

Every month its position in the sky shifts.

I don’t want you to turn out to be that

inconsistent too.

ROMEO

If my heart’s dear love—

JULIET

Well, don’t swear. Although you bring me

joy, I can’t take joy in this exchange of

promis tonight.

Leaving you is a thousand times wor

than being near you. A lover goes toward

his beloved as enthusiastically as a

schoolboy leaving his books, but when

he leaves his girlfriend, he feels as

mirable as the schoolboy on his way to

school.

【皂罗袍】原来姹紫嫣红开遍，似这般都付与断井颓垣。良辰美景奈何天，赏心乐事谁家院！恁般景致，我老爷和奶奶再不提起。〔合〕朝飞暮卷，云霞翠轩；雨丝风片，烟波画船——锦屏人忒看的这韶光贱！〔贴〕是花都放了，那牡丹还早。

第十二出 寻梦

【懒画眉】最撩人春色是今年。少什么低就高来粉画垣，元来春心无处不飞悬。〔绊介〕哎，睡荼蘼抓住裙衩线，恰便是花似人心好处牵。这一湾流水呵！

【忒忒令】那一答可是湖山石边，这一答似牡丹亭畔。嵌雕阑芍药芽儿浅，一丝丝垂杨线，一丢丢榆荚钱。线儿春甚金钱吊转！......

【豆叶黄】……咳，寻来寻去，都不见了。牡丹亭，芍药阑，怎生这般凄凉冷落，杳无人迹？好不伤心也！

【月上海棠】……〔望介〕呀，无人之处，忽然大梅树一株，梅子磊磊可爱。

【二犯幺令】……罢了，这梅树依依可人，我杜丽娘若死后，得葬于此，幸矣。

【江儿水】偶然间心似缱，梅树边。这般花花草草由人恋，生生死死随人愿，便酸酸楚楚无人怨。待打并香魂一片，阴雨梅天，守的个梅根相见。〔倦坐介〕〔贴上〕“佳人拾翠春亭远，侍女添香院清。”咳，小姐走乏了，梅树下盹。

【川拨棹】你游花院，怎靠着梅树偃？〔旦〕一时间望，一时间望眼连天，忽忽地伤心自怜。〔泣介〕〔合〕知怎生情怅然，知怎生泪暗悬？〔贴〕小姐甚意儿？

【前腔】为我慢归休，缓留连。〔内鸟啼介〕听，听这不如归春暮天，难道我再，难道我再到这亭园，则挣的个长眠和短眠！
