Lantern Festival Introduction
Lantern Festival is a traditional Chine festival celebrated on the 15th
day of the first lunar month, which usually falls in February or March. It marks
the end of the Chine New Year celebrations and the beginning of Spring.
Also known as Yuanxiao Festival, it is a time for family reunions, feasting on
glutinous rice balls, and admiring beautifully decorated lanterns.
History and Legends
The origins of Lantern Festival can be traced back to the Han Dynasty
(206 BC – 220 AD). According to historical records, Emperor Wu of Han
ordered the celebration of Lantern Festival to honor the full moon and the
start of spring. Over time, the festival became associated with religious and
cultural customs as well as legends.
One of the most famous legends related to Lantern Festival is the story
of Yuanxiao. According to legend, a beautiful girl named Yuanxiao was
parated from her husband during the Han Dynasty. She misd him dearly
and decided to make glutinous rice balls shaped like the full moon to express
her love for him. She gave the rice balls to her neighbors, who appreciated
her kindness and helped her find her husband. To commemorate her, people
began eating glutinous rice balls on Lantern Festival.
