The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing produced some wonderful sporting performances. In athletics, for example, the Irish sprinter Jason Smyth won a gold medal in the 100 meters sprint event for men. His time was 10 point 62 conds, and he t a new world record.
Another great performance was by Usain Bolt from Jamaica. He’s a sprinter too, and he also ran in the men’s 100 metres sprint event. He was the fastest runner----his time was 9 point 69 conds. So he won the gold medal, and he t a new world record. Hmm!Something strange there How can two people win the gold medal for the same event And Jason Smyth was slower than Bolt, but he won the gold. So : two people won the gold medal for the same event. And one was faster than the other Yes, you’ve understood correctly. But before we tell you how this is possible, let’s look at another example.
In the women’s discus throwing event, the best throw was by Stefanie Brown Trafton from the USA--- she threw the discus 64 point 74 metres and won the gold medal. But Marianne Buggenhagen from Germany also won the gold medal for throwing the discus—she threw it 27 point eight metres. So饮食与健康手抄报—Marianne Buggenhagen’s throw was shorter, but she also came first.
How is this possible
CD 1 T11
How is this possible Well, the answer is this : Jason Smyth and Marianne Buggenhagen are disabled—Jason is blind and Mariaane is in a wheelchair. They took part in a different Olympic Games, one called the Paralympics---an Olympic Games for disabled people.
&
The Paralympics started in 1960 in Rome—there were 400 sports people there. In 2008 in Beijing , there were more than 4000 athletes.
乾隆传奇 The athletes in the Paralympics produce wonderful performances. Are they as good as ordinary athletes.Usually they’re not as fast or as strong, but some disabled runners and swimmers are only a little slower than regular athletes. Not many people in the world , for example , are able to run as fast as Jason Smyth! Another remarkable example is Natalie Du Toit, a swimmer from South Africa, who in 2008 took part in both the Olympic games and the Paralympics. In the Paralympics, she won five gold medals for swimming. In the regular Olympics, Du Toit swam in the ten kilometre race. She swam most of the race with her hair in her eyes becau her swimming cap came off. But she still finished sixteenth! Du Toit has only one leg—she lost her left leg above the knee in a motorcycle crash in 2001.
