Passage two:
Car thieves who find their most valuable tool---the car key---in the ignition of parked cars may soon find that this tool is missing. In an effort to reduce the theft of one million vehicles a year, car makers are looking for devices to replace the traditional car key. One such device has been invented recently.
Developed by William J. Hawkins, the new device is a coded celluloid strip that looks like a credit card. This card, with 16000 possible code combination, is put into a slot in the dashboard. A memory device inside the engine locks the ignition. This allows the car to be started and the hood and trunk to be opened. In order to stop the engine, the card must be taken out of the slot. This will prevent drivers from leaving their celluloid cards in the dashboard slot.
Without a card, or with the wrong card, the ignition and everything el remains locked. Since thieves can’t open the hoods, they can’t even ‘jump’ the wires.
