4. The Audio-lingual Method is in origin mainly American. The Audio-lingual Method was developed in the U.S. during the Second World War.
5. At that time, the U.S. government found it a great necessity to t up a special language training program to supply the war with language personnel. Therefore, the government co
mmissioned American universities to develop FL programs for military personnel. Thus the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) was established in 1942. The objectives of the army program were for students to attain conversational proficiency

The informant rved as a source of language for imitation, and the linguist supervid the learning experience. With small class of mature and highly motivated students, this intensive system adopted by the army often achieved excellent results. Linguists and applied linguists during this period were becoming increasingly involved in the teaching of English as a FL. In 1941 the first English Language Institute in the U.S. was established in the University of Michigan. The director of the institute was Charles Fries, who applied the principles of structural linguistics to LT. The result is an approach which advocated aural training first, then pronunciation training, followed by speaking, reading and writing.

7. The emergence of the Audio-lingual Method resulted from the incread attention to FTL in the U.S. towards the end of the 1950s. the need for a radical change and rethinking of FLTM made LT specialists t about developing a method that was applicable to conditions in U.S. college and university classrooms. They draw on the earlier experiences of the army programs and the Aural-Oral or Structural Approach developed by Fries and his colleagues, adding insights taken from behaviorist psychology.
8. This combination of structural linguistic theory, aural-oral procedures, and behaviorist psychology led to the Audio-lingual Method, which was widely adopted for TFL in North American colleges and universities.紫竹公园

Theory of language
1. The theory of language underlying Audio-lingualism was derived from a view propod by American linguists in the 1930s and the 1940s. The view then came to known as structural linguistics with Bloomfield and Fries as its reprentatives.
2. Structural linguistics views language as a system of structurally related elements (such as phonemes, morphemes, words, structure, and ntence types) for the expression of meaning.
3. The grammatical system consists of a list of grammatical elements and rules for their linear combination into words, phras and ntences.
4. According to a structural view, language has the following characteristics in the Audio-lingual Method:
(1). Elements in a language are produced in a rule-governed (structured ) way.
(2). Language samples could be exhaustively described at any structural level of description.
pps文件  (3). Language is structured like a pyramid, that is, linguistic levels are system within systems.
5. Phonemic systems led to morphemic systems, and the in turn led to the higher-level systems of phras, claus and ntences. The structural linguists believed that the primary medium of language is oral, that is language is speech. This view of language offered the foundations for the Audio-lingual Method in language teaching in which speech was given in a priority.安全警示
6. The Audio-lingual Method is the first theories to recommend the development of a language teaching theory on declared linguistic and psychological principles.
Theory of learning
1.A method of teaching can not be bad simply on a theory of language. It also needs to refer to the psychology of learning and to a learning theory.
