Character Analysis of The Cask of Amontillado
Abstract: The theme was revealed through the analysis of the two protagonists‟ characters.Fortunato‟s arrogance, fatuity are embodied in his language, behaviour and appearance. As to Montresor, his obduracy is vividly displayed step by step in his “路由器调试perfect” plan, he has lost the basic humanity, he is the victim of the industrial society.Key Words: character, arrogant, obduracy, warning, downfall
The Cask of Amontillado is a short story indited by Edgar Allan Poe, a famous American no
velist, poet and essayist. The story tells us a cliff-hanging revenge process, which involves two protagonists.Fortunato, the victim of the plan, is extremely arrogant, astrut and fatuous;Montresor, the avenger and the hatcher of the plan, is over-rational and marblehearted.Through depicting the two typical characters, Poe aims at warning the modern people that the high-developed industrial society is bringing people to downfall and final perdition.I would like to put Fortunato in the first place to analyze. One important aspect of his character is arrogance. The first mention of him is indirect description, from Montresor‟s narration, we get to know that Fortunato‟s weak point-he prides himlf on his connoisur in wine.We can imagine how lf-conceited Fortunato is through this artful description. And this is rightly proved in the language description in the following.“Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing.Amontillado! You have been impod upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado.” When Montresor tempts him with Amontillado and mentions another connoisur of wine Luchesi deliberately, Fortunato is so eager to display himlf that is easily caught with chaff. He even vilipends Luchesi to show his sovereign ability. We could e that he is imm
erd in his arrogance and is totally driven by it.And there is also an ironic description, I notice that every time they meet some obstacle in the vaults, Montresor will mention Luchesi and Fortunato immediately forgets anything and moves on resolutely. It is his hubris that leads him to his tomb, step by step.Another obvious character of Fortunato is fatuity. We can e from the novel that the first direct description of him is about his appearance.“The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.” Striped dress is often the symble of the prisoner or psychopath, also he has bells on his conical cap, and the are all sighs of a fool and indicated Fortunato‟s hebetudes.I notice that at the end of the novel, Fortunato mentions his wife, he calls her „Lady Fortunato‟, and we can tell that he is an aristocrat in the society. However, when he gets Montresor‟嘉陵江s vaults, he puts up his ignorance of Montresor‟s large family and their arms. This also indicates his fatuity. At last, he is a person devoid of good education. We can tell this from his language, he vilipends Luchesi when he fears that Luchesi might take away his opportunity to display.Fortunato is typical in his time, he dies of his sovereign pride endowed by the high-developed indust
rial civilization. Then is the character analysis of Montresor, the designer and executant of the perfect revenge plan.First of all, it is about his obduracy. In the very beginning of the novel is the vivid psychological description of Montresor. From his determined and confident tone, we can feel that he has no n of sympathy in his heart.Furthermore, from his reveng goal, “I must not only punish, but punish with impunity.A wrong is unredresd when retribution overtakes its redresr. It is equally unredresd when the avenger fails to make himlf felt as such to him who has done the wrong”, we can n he has lost his basic human nature and merely treats this revenge as a game.In addition, at the climax of the story, when he hears Fortunato女人顺产‟s struggling sound on the wall he is locked, Montresor even feels more satisfied. And when he hears the durative screaming, he merely hesitates and trembles for a brief moment before he continues his brickwork again. Thus, he has completely lost the humanity and the basic right to be a real human.Montresor is also good at scheming, we can easily e his outstanding n from the following details.Firstly, at the beginning of his narration, we learn that he still smiles to Fortunato when he is determined to kill him, for fear of arousing Fortunato‟s sus求圆的周长
picion. Then, he choos the perfect time-the carnival ason, during which people are all busy making merry and all of them are in different costumes. This is splendiferous cover for his murder. Moreover, he is quite aware of Fortunato‟s weak point and takes advantage of it quite well.He us Amontillado to tempt Fortunato and stimulates him with the implicit threat, Luchesi. The last detail I would like to mention here is the way he dispels his rvants. He tells them he won‟t come back until the next morning, he knows it is enough to ensure their fleeing since it is the carnival ason.In order to avoid their suspicion and insure his innocence, he also orders them not to stir from the hou.How flawless his great plan is!Thus, Montresor‟正手拉球s character is displayed before us incisively and vividly. In fact, he buries himlf at the same time he finished Fortunato‟s life in his vaults. His heart has been enwrapped by pure concept of n and becomes its slave, he los the basic qualities as a human, he cannot find the significance of life anymore and he los the right and ability to enjoy life.Through depicting the two typical characters in the industrial society, Poe gives people who are immerd in the development of science and technology a alarming warning, he warns them to be prudent about the high-
developed industrial civilization. It may not bring people to the bright future as they imagined, on the contrary, it may deprive people‟s emotions and humanity innsibly and make people arrogant or over-rational, then fretful, confud and even desperate. It may lead people to downfall in the end.

Review of a Ro for Emily
霸道总裁经典语录A Ro for Emily is a very popular short story becau of its style, climax, and plot. The author, William Faulkner, was a Southern writer from Oxford, Mississippi.Faulkner bas this story on the tale of Oxford's aristocracy Miss Mary Neilson. She married Captain Jack Hume, the charming Yankee foreman of a street-paving crew, over her family's shocked protests. The style of this story is fal romance.Miss Emily's father, before his death, would run off every man that tried to court her.Becau of this, she felt any man she loved would leave her. After falling in love with Homer Baron, she feared he would run off like the others. To keep this from happening, she poisoned him and kept his body upstairs
in the bedroom. The climax focus on the room where the corp was found. After Miss Emily's death, the town people were cleaning up the hou and found a room that was locked. They had to break down the door.To their surpri, they found Homer Baron's corp lying in the bed dresd in a night shirt. As the story progress there is no indication that he had died. When they found the toilet things sitting on the dresr with initials H.B., it was well known that the corp was Homer Baron.I first thought it was her father in the bed, but I realized that her father was
already buried.I then knew it had to be her lover.I cringed on the thought of what she did while she was lying next to the corp. Finally, the end of this story surrounds a woman's life from her mid twenties until her death at the age of venty-four.It describes a prominent lady of a town who led a private life.I learned, while reading this story that this woman is crazy and had the mind of a child. She emed to lo everything she loved. But I still have a question. The question is “Where is the ro in the A Ro for Emily?” Emily was never given a ro, even when she died there was no mention of a ro.In the story the only time a scented thing was mentioned was lime to cover a smell.Emily like the insi
nuated ro is never prent in the story.Even when Emily has a line of dialog it is spoken thought the filter of the narrator’s perspective. The narrator or the town is concerned with what role Emily is playing, although since Emily is not prent in the story, but through hearsay, the reader has to decipher between the roll assigned to her by the narrator and actuality of the role Emily fulfills.Everyone went to Emily’s funeral. No one went to the funeral out of respect for the dead.Emily became a person known only though hearsay between town folk.No one knew Emily.“Women went out of curiosity to e the inside of her hou.” The women went to the funeral to fill a gap.In a time where entertainment wasn’t prevalent, Emily became the late night drama and sole topic of conversation for the town. The town did not morn, the person, Emily they mourned the personified topic of conversation. The town paid respect to the topic that took up time in their conversations. The town saw Emily as inparable from what she was.The town saw Emily as, “…a small, fat woman in black…” as oppod to a woman with a small skeleton. The town could not parate the Emily they knew from the Emily that was prent. The juxtaposition was fud into the town’s notion of Emily. The druggist must hav
e en a hint of Emily’s shift in personality. The druggist either did not care about Emily or wanted her dead. The druggist gave her the poison thinking the probability that she was going to kill herlf was likely. The druggist didn’t even consider another possibility before spreading the rumor to the town. The druggist would not have given up the poison to Emily before her father died, but now Emily was the same one the town sighed, “…Poor Emily…” for.Emily was a lady when her father was alive.Emily is only a lady, becau of who her father was.She is a lady out of only legacy. The narrator knows what Emily did, yet the narrator sympathies with Emily up till the end trick the reader into sympathizing along with the story. In the end the reader and the narrator know Emily is a lady no longer, not
only becau she is now dead but becau she killed and kept a corp for cuddling.Ladies don’t cuddle with corps, but up until the discovery of the corp Emily remained a lady in the eyes of the town.“They waited until Miss Emily was decently in the ground before…” the town opened the door to the room Emily was keeping her corp. The town waited becau they knew they were going to find something off kilter in
小灰蝶that room.Something which could and eventually force change on their opinion of Emily, the town did not wanted to keep what they knew about Emily while she was alive parate from what they knew about her when she was dead.Upon the discovery of the body the fud juxtaposition the town carried with them was removed from their notion of Emily.Neither, the reader or the narrator can relate the Emily at the end of the story to the Emily that existed to hinted ideas of who Emily was before events of the story. There is no reconciliation between the two Emily’s.They share different traits. The first, being the lady, the father’s daughter. The cond Emily being an off kilter person struggling with craziness the only way she knows how.But becau the story is not written from Emily’s perspective the reader cannot e the shift into craziness directly until the end and is left wondering with the narrator what caud Emily to defy my notion of what a lady is suppod to be?
