Thousands of remedies have been propod for hiccups, each with its enthusiastic backers. Some em to work, others do not. Rearch into known cas indicates that if a sufferer firmly believes a particular treatment will succeed, more often than not it does. So doctors have been led to the conclusion that the cure for hiccups is at least partly psychological.
One widely held belief is that a sharp fright will end a troublesome bout of hiccups, but many people prefer just waiting for them to go away as this "cure" is often wor than the ailment itlf.
Between 1948 and 1956 Jack 0'Leary,an American, reckoned he hiccuped 160 million times. He tried 60,000 remedies, all in vain. Finally, in desperation, he prayed to St. Jude, patron of hopeless caus. His hiccuping stopped.
Another victim was Heinz Icke,a 55-year-old British plumber, who hiccuped for eight months after an operation in November 1973. Suggestions poured in to him from all over the world. He tried them all, without success. Doctors, alarmed by his failing strength, operated a-gain. Still the hiccups went on.
Eventually, in despair,Heinz drank a "cret" herbal mixture nt by an anonymous donor. By the evening of that day his hiccups had gone. Was it the mixture, or his faith in it, that cured him? As yet, no one can say.

It remains to be en whether the rerves of raw materials would be sufficient to supply a world economy which would have grown by 500 per cent. e as the industrialid areas, then world rerves would already be exhausted by 1985.
All this only goes to show just how important it is to t up a plan to conrve and divide up fairly natural resources on a world-wide scale.
This is a matter of life and death becau world population is exploding at an incredible rate. By the middle of the next century population will expand every year by as much as it did in the first 1500 years after Christ. In the southern, poor, parts of the globe, the figures are enough to make your hair stand on end. Even supposing that steps are taken to stabili world population in the next fifty years, the number of inhabitants per square kilometre will increa by from 4 in the United States to 140 in South-East Asia. What can we do about it?
In the first hypothesis we do nothing. By the year 2000, the southern parts of the world would then have a population greater than the total world population today. Calcutta would have 60 million inhabitants. It is unthinkable.
Alternatively, we could start acting right now to bring births under control within fifteen years so that population levels off. Even then the population in the southern areas would not stop growing for venty-five years.
