艺术自律性要在这种张力结构内维持住自身,必须依靠艺术作品层面的审美功能与反思功能的统一作为艺术活动自律性的基础。黑格尔美学正是从这一点切入,从其对艺术美的发展,为审美功能和反思功能的统一打下基础。黑格尔认为,由于康德认为物自体不可知,自然本身是否确实具有形式的无目的的合目的性这点亦不可知,所以,鉴赏判断中反思判断力对知性和理性的调和是完全主观的,主体与世界仍处于割裂状态。这直接导致了康德虽然认识到艺术是一种理性的自由创造,但未能真正阐明艺术美的独特性。理性在鉴赏判断中是置身事外的,但在艺术美中却有着至关重要的地位。康德未能看到理性在艺术美中的作用,正是由于他认为没有一个恰当的实在界和能与形式的无目的的合目的性相对应。但在艺术中,艺术本身是理性的创造,这就决定了至少在艺术品中应当存在着这种对应。而正是由于这一对应,使得艺术美不同于单纯的鉴赏判断。黑格尔将艺术美理解成绝对理念的感性显现。这绝对理念就是心灵。心灵依照辩证逻辑在世界中不断地实现着自己,反观自身,完成自己与世界的统一。这一过程产生了三个绝对领域:哲学、宗教、艺术。依据心灵呈现给自己的不同方式,与艺术领域相对应的就是美。黑格尔将艺术美提升到了心灵自我实现的必然普遍性高度上,就使艺术在真理领域与审美领域的交界处取得了自身不可取代的必要的独立地位。
