From the angle of translatology, translation includes thought level, mantic level and aesthetic level. But thought level is the basis and precondition upon which the other levels are built. 翻译学涉及的不仅是两种语言，更涉及两种语言所代表的文化，而两种文化的差异实质体现在各自群体的思维方式上。因此思维方式是基础。文章第一部分分析了思维、语言和翻译三者间的关系，指出翻译活动的实质是一种思维活动;第二部分追溯了造成英汉两种思维方式差异的根源。第三部分分析英汉思维方式的主要不同之处及各自在语言表达形式上的反映。总之，对英汉思维方式差异的比较与研究有助于我们从更深层次去探讨翻译理论,从而更有效地从事翻译实践活动。

The most commonly accepted definition of language is "language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols for communication."(Ward Haugh, 1977) so language is a special tool for human beings to communicate. It is possd by human beings and allows people to say things to one another and to express thoughts and needs. In short, language is a unique system of communication and it is the cornerstone of society.
Theoretically speaking thought pattern is an intrinsic part of culture. Quoted as Bates and Plog (1990), culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs behaviors and arti
facts that the members of a society u to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning." As it is, culture is an extremely complex concept and enormous subject. However complex it is, it can be roughly classified into three categories in scope: material culture, institutional culture and mental culture. By mental culture, we refer to people's mentalities and behaviors perceptions, concept of value and thought patterns, .etc.
In teens of thought pattern, what is thought should be taken into consideration. Thought, philosophically speaking, is a process of our human minds to reflect the objective reality. Specifically speaking, it is a process of our minds to do analysis, synthesis, judgment, inference and other cognitive activities on the basis of prentation and concept. It is a unique activity of human beings and come into being through social practice.
It is known that language is a special tool for human beings to express meaning and to communicate thoughts, so it is a special phenomenon. Thought, however, is the function
of human brain and a process of human mind reflecting the objective world, so it is a social phenomenon universal to human beings. Therefore language and thought belong to different categories. The former is specific and social while the latter is general and universal.
The relationship between language and thought has haunted the philosophers ever since the time of ancient Greece has been a challenge to linguists, psychologists, and anthropologists, as it is really complex and elusive. There are rather different views about the general nature of the relationship between language and thought. And there is no unanimous agreement and some of the theories are even contradictory. It is probably true to say that every relationship between the two has been propod by some theorists or author. Classic theorists like Plato and Aristotle argue that the categories of thought determine the categories of language. To them language is only the outward form or expression of thought. An opposing view was expresd by the behaviorist J.B.Watson, according to whom, thought is language. He believed that thought is sub-vocal speech, like a very quite whisper to onelf. Watson's position, which is rather radical, is no longer

popular today. A less radical position is that language determines thought. According to this view, the categories of thought are determined by linguistic categories.
