The history of Chine traditional costume
Today, I will give a brief introduction to the history of Chine traditional costume. For thousands of years, a great number of costume designers and makers in China have devoted themlves to building the “Costume Kingdom”, making the costumes an important component of Chine culture.
First of all, let’s look at the origin of Chines costume. In the past, the Chine lived in caves. To keep warm, they covered themlves with natural materials such as leaves, grass and animal furs. And then about 18000 years ago, the Chine invented wing which allowed them to make better clothes with animal skins to protect them from harsh conditions increasing their productivity.
Next, Chine rules of etiquette regarding costumes and adornments started taking shape in the Zhou dynasty regulating from nobles to commoners. Attire was already classified into sacrificial attire, court attire, army uniform, mourning attire and wedding attire.

During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, different styles of clothes showed different positions and origins of people.
In the Qin dynasty, after unifying China, Qinshihuang established many social systems and changed the style of costume dramatically according to the concept of yin and yang and the theory of five elements. Thus, costumes and adornments were mostly black related with water which extinguishes fire symbolized the zhou dynasty. And then the “dark style “咏怀八十二首其一for clothing continued till the Western Han dynasty and changed to red in the Eastern Han dynasty.
During the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern dynasty, the costume of this period was classified into two categories: the folk costume and the official costume. The first one was clo-fitting, round-collared and vented; the latter was developed into formal attire.
In the Tang dynasty, clothing was more varied than before becau the state was more open to the outside world, especially the clothes for women. They did not have to abide by the traditional dress code. They were allowed to expo their arms and back and wear
dress that absorbed elements from other cultures. They could also wear men’s riding outfit if they liked.
