[Class 97 (iii)] In a gyroscopic compass, the phantom element is rotated relatively to the azimuth gear by correction mechanism so that the azimuth gear is correctly orientated notwithstanding the speed, cour, and latitude error of the gyro axis and phantom element. When the rod 6 is axially adjusted by the screw 8 in accordance with the ship's speed and latitude and the pivot of the member 5 conquently moved from concentricity with the vertical axis of the compass, change of cour of the ship and therefore turning of the rod 6 relatively to the azimuth gear 3 caus motion to be imparted to the block 4 and in turn to the crosshead 1. The latter has a forked arm 10 engaging a pin 12 on the phantom ring 13, which is accordingly turned relatively to the azimuth gear 3 when the crosshead 1 moves in a N-S direction.
