1. Standard English
Standard English is bad on the speech of the upper class of southeastern England. It’s preferred by the educated and is widely ud in media and taught at schools. It has developed and has been promoted as a model for correct British English. It’s also the norm carried overas. Today, Standard English is codified to the extent that the grammar and vocabulary are much the same everywhere in the world where English is taught and ud.
2. Bill of Rights (in U.S.)人权法案
In 1789, James Madison introduced in the Hou of Reprentatives a ries of amendments which later were drafted into twelve propod amendments and nt to the states for ratification. Ten of them were ratified in 1791 and the first ten amendments to the constitution were called the Bills of Rights becau they were to insure individual liberties.
3. Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is associated with the time when Europeans first came to the New World. When Pilgrims first arrived in 1620, life was very hard and there was not enough food, so many of them died. The Native Americans helped them and then they had a bountiful harvest next year. So they held a big celebration to thank God and the Native Americans.
4. Norman Conquest
The Norman Conquest of 1066 is perhaps the best-known event in English history. William the conqueror confiscated almost all the land and gave it to his Norman followers. He replaced the weak Saxon rule with a strong Norman government. So the feudal system was completely established in England.
5. British Parliament
It includes three elements: the Sovereign, the Hou of Lords and the Hou of Commons. Its the Supreme law-making authority in Britain. The real center of parliamentary power lies in the Hou of Commons. Its other functions include: to control and criticize the executive government; to control the raising and the spending of money.
6. Lost generation
The Lost Generation refers to the young American writers caught up in World War and cut off from the old values, yet unable to come to terms with the new era when civilization has gone mad. They produced works of disillusionment Two reprentative writers are F.Scott Fitizgerald and Ernest Hemingway.
7. Melting pot
The United States is not merely a nation, but a nation of nations. The immigrants came in waves, including the Europeans, the Africans and the Asians. Therefore, America was described as a "melting pot" where various racial and ethnic groups are assimilated into the American culture. Recently, Americans have been called a "salad bowl" in that people of different races and ethnic groups mix harmoniously, but at the same time keep their distinct culture and custom.
8.Renaissance 文艺复兴
It was a cultural and artistic movement in England between the 14th and 16th century. It was slow in penetrating England. Becau of the endless wars and insular position. During the period of the Renaissance in England, the new style of buildings, statues and pictures were appeared. Humanism is the main spirit of the Renaissance.
9. the Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of independent sovereign states, all of which acknowledge the British monarch as the symbolic head of the association. The Commonwealth is not a political union, and its member states have full autonomy to manage their internal and external affairs. It is primarily an organization in which countries with diver economic backgrounds have an opportunity for clo and equal interaction after gaining independence. Its primary purpo is to advocate democracy, human rights and to promote economic cooperation and growth within its members.
