Bob and Sue Harvey spent nine years as resident fellows in a dormitory at Sanford and in their bookVirtual Reality and The College Freshman, they write “The Freshman oftenfaces an identity problem during the first mester.” College is a more pressured environment than it ud to be, in part becau the academic gap between high school and college has incread. Many college freshmen have never had to make independent decisions about x, drugs and alcohol. Most don’t know how to manage their time or money. They often feel lonely and overwhelmed, resulting in anxiety and depression.

Nancy Corbin, director of clinical rvice for student-counling (咨询) rvices at Iowa Stat
e University, says her office is eing a significant increa in requests for counling from freshmen who are having trouble making the adjustment to college life. She says older teenagers increasingly lack the skills to deal with personal problems that aren’t easily defined or fixed. And they get homesick but have a hard time admitting it.
Parents and high schools can make things easier on freshmen by preparing them differently. For example, by teaching them to budget their hours and dollars. The Harveys think high schools should offer a college-life cour. “Parents need to focus more on relationship and personal issues and less on how many sheets and towels to take,” they say. Many homesick freshmen  think they’ll be regarded as failures if they come home before Thanksgiving. So parents can help by letting them know they’re welcome to return if they feel the need. In the meantime, parents have to find new ways to keep in touch with their college kids. One of the best ways is e-mail. It’s less unpleasant and less expensive than constant phone calls and is more likely to be answered than a handwritten letter.

"Long time no e." is a very interesting ntence. When I first read this ntence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
交通安全三字经Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chine greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprid to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did rearch onGoogle. com. To my surpri, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing "Long time no e." Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans u daily. Interestingly, if you type this phra in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish ntence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created
a worldwide famous Chine detective named "Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chine wisdom by quoting Confucius. "Long time no e." was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no e." became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of the movies.
Some scholars compare America to a hugemelting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japane, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chine culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chine words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.黑提子
