句中While walking the dog是状语从句的省略形式,相当于“While you were walking the dog”。当状语从句中的主语与主句主语一致或为it,且从句中含be动词时,可省略从句的主语和be动词。
如果主从句主语不一致,应使用状语从句的完整形式。如:
When I was crossing the street,a policeman signaled me to stop.
我过马路时,一个警察示意我停下来。
