ADC1000-USB A/D Converter
The ADC1000-USB External USB A/D Converter is a plug-and-play high-speed analog-to-digital (A/D) converter designed for hassle-free instrument-to-PC interfacing. An A/D converter is necessary to interface all Ocean Optics spectrometers to PCs.USB Connection. The ADC1000-USB inter-faces an S2000 Spectrometer to a notebook or desktop PC via a USB port.When interfaced to a PC via the USB port,the ADC1000-USB does not require an external power supply -- it draws its power from the PC to
which it is connected.Your ADC1000-USB can connect via the USB port to any PC that us a Windows 98/Me/2000/XP operating system and has OOIBa32 installed and configured for u with your ADC1000-USB. If multiple PCs meet the two qualifications, you can switch your ADC1000-USB and spectrometer among them.
Serial Port. The ADC1000-USB also has a rial port for interfacing the S2000 or S1024DW Spectrometer to PCs, PLCs and other devices that support the RS-232 communication protocol.The rial port on the ADC1000-USB can also be ud to interface a spectrometer to a handheld PC running Windows CE 3.0.

Using the USB Option: Desktop and Notebook PCs
Interface the ADC1000-USB to the Spectrometer
If you ordered your S2000 Spectrometer and
ADC1000-USB A/D Converter at the same time, the spectrometer and the A/D converter probably share one housing. If, however, you already owned a spectrometer and purchad the ADC1000-USB parately, you must connect the ADC1000-USB to the back of the spectrometer, as en in the picture at right.
DO NOT CONNECT THE ADC1000-USB TO YOUR PC AT THIS TIME.
Install Software
When you get your ADC1000-USB, you might be tempted to connect the ADC1000-USB to your PC first. However, you must first install the latest version of OOIBa32 Spectrometer Operating Software.* Before installing OOIBa32, make sure that no other applications are running. You can download the latest version of OOIBa32 from the Software and Technical Resources CD or from our web site /technical/softwaredownloads.asp .1. . At the “Welcome” dialog box, click Next>.
2. At the “Destination Location” dialog box, accept the default or choo Brow to pick a
destination directory. Click Next>.
3. At the “Backup Replaced Files” dialog box, lect either Yes or No . We recommend lecting
Yes . If you lect Yes, accept the default or choo Brow to pick a destination directory.Click Next>.
4. Select a Program Manager Group. Click Next>. At the “Start Installation” dialog box, click Next>.
5. Follow all prompts regarding the Spectrometer Configuration diskette that came with your
spectrometer system.
6. At the “Installation Complete” dialog box, choo Finish>.

Connect the ADC1000-USB to your PC
To u the USB port on the ADC1000-USB, the PC to which it is interfacing must have a
Windows 98/Me/2000/XP operating system. (The USB port on your PC supplies sufficient power to the ADC1000-USB if the ADC1000-USB is connected to 5 or fewer spectrometer channels. For more than 5 spectrometer channels, an external power supply is necessary.)1. Find the USB cable that came with your shipment.
2. Inrt the square end of the cable into the side of the ADC1000-USB. Inrt the
other end into a USB port on your PC.
3. If you installed OOIBa32 correctly, an Add New Hardware Wizard
message tells you that the ADC1000-USB was successfully loaded.S2000Spectrometer

Configure Software
Wait at least 30 conds between connecting the ADC1000-USB to your PC and starting any software. After 30 conds, navigate to the OOIBa32 icon and lect it. You need to configure OOIBa32 before using the ADC1000-USB and your spectrometer. (For details on using OOIBa32, refer to the OOIBa32 Spectrometer Operating Software Manual, which can be found
on the Software and Technical Resources CD and our web site.)
Operator and Serial Number Dialog Box
First, a prompt to enter a ur name and software rial number appears. Some data files will include this information in the header.
Default Spectrometer Configuration File
Next, a message asks you to lect a default spectrometer configuration file. Navigate to the OOIBa32 directory and choo the file with .spec as the extension. The .spec extension is preceded by the rial number of your ADC1000-USB.
Configure Hardware Dialog Box
Next, the Configure Hardware dialog box opens. The
parameters in this dialog box usually are t only
once -- when OOIBa32 is first installed and the
software first opens. (You can access this dialog box
by lecting Configure | Hardware from the menu.)
1. Under Spectrometer Type, choo
S2000/PC2000/USB2000/HR2000.
2. Under A/D Converter Type, choo ADC1000-
USB.
3. Under USB Serial Number, choo your
ADC1000-USB.

5. Your system should be acquiring data and
responding to light. If it isn't, exit and restart
OOIBa32.
Spectrometer Configuration Dialog Box
Select Spectrometer | Configure from the menu and t system parameters.
In the Wavelength Calibration tab, the

from a memory chip on the ADC1000-USB,
but only if you purchad your spectrometer
and ADC1000-USB at the same time. The
numbers in the Wavelength Calibration tab
must match the coefficients from the
Wavelength Calibration Data Sheet that
came with your spectrometer. If they do not

click on the Write to ADC1000-USB button.
Also, make sure that the Master and
Channel Enabled boxes are lected.
In the A/D Interface tab, enter the same
values as you did in the Configure雷艳红
Hardware dialog box. When you exit OOIBa32, this data is stored in the .spec file.
OOIBa32 Settings Dialog Box
Choo Edit | Settings from the menu to t OOIBa32 parameters in the OOIBa32 Settings dialog box. Go through this dialog box to lect options for saving, opening, and printing data; to choo wav sound files for various program events; to configure default tting files; and to lect other important options such as storing data, copying data and choosing warning messages. Configure Data Acquisition Dialog Box
Finally, lect Spectrum | Configure Data Acquisition from the menu to open the Configure Data Acquisition dialog box and to t your data acquisition parameters such as the integration time, averaging and boxcar smoothing, and veral other parameters.
Connect Spectroscopic Accessories
To find operating instructions on products such as light sources, sampling chambers, probes, fibers or any other of our spectroscopic accessories, check the Software and Technical Resources CD or our web site at /Technical/OperatingInstructions.asp.
Start Software and Receive Data
Run OOIBa32 in Scope Mode and take a dark reference spectrum. Choo the absorbance, transmission or relative irradiance mode to take your spectroscopic measurements. For detailed information on OOIBa32 functions and features and for an Experiment Tutorial, refer to the OOIBa32 Spectrometer Operating Software Manual.
Rectifying an Incorrect Installation
If you connected the ADC1000-USB to your PC before you installed OOIBa32, you will not be able
to u your spectrometer. You will receive an Add New Hardware Wizard message box as your computer tries to find the device driver necessary for it to interface to the ADC1000-USB. Ultimately, you will receive a message that tells you that Windows has not installed a driver for
the device. Also, if you have an older version of OOIBa32, you need to install the latest version. If you have an older version of OOIBa32
If the PC you want to u to interface to your ADC1000-USB already has an older version of OOIBa32, you need to install the latest version of OOIBa32. You can download the latest version of OOIBa32 from our Software and Technical Resources CD or from our web site /technical/softwaredownloads.asp. (You do not have to uninstall the current version before installing the latest version.)
If you connected ADC1000-USB before installing OOIBa32
1. Navigate to your computer's Device Manager. For Windows 98/Me operating systems, right-
click on My Computer, lect Properties and click on the Device Manager tab. For
Windows 2000/XP operating systems, right-click on My Computer, lect Properties, lect the Hard
ware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
2. Scroll down until you e Other devices. Select the "+" sign to the left of Other devices.
3. Under Other devices, you will e Ocean Optics ADC1000-USB next to a large question
mark. Select Ocean Optics ADC1000-USB and lect the Remove button. Click OK.
4. A warning box asks if it is okay to remove the Ocean Optics ADC1000-USB device from your
system. Click OK.
5. Unplug your ADC1000-USB from your PC. Follow directions starting with Connect the
ADC1000-USB to your PC on page 3.
