段落翻译
A.
1. The taste of McDonald’s French fries played a crucial role in the chain’s success and long praid by customers, competitors, and even food critics. Their distinctive taste does not stem from the kind of potatoes that MacDonald’s buys, the technology that process them, or the restaurant equipment that fires them. The taste of a French fry is largely determined by the cooking oil. For decades McDonald’s cooked its French fries in a mixture of about 7 percent cottoned oil and 93 percent beef tallow. The mixture gave the fires their unique flavor.
2. In 1990, amid a barrage of criticism over the amount cholesterol in its fries, McDonald’s switched to pure vegetable oil. This prented the company with a challenge: how to make fries that subtly taste like beef without cooking them in beef tallow. A look at the ingredients in McDonald’s French fires suggests how the problem was solved. Toward the end of the list is a emingly innocuous yet oddly mysterious phra: “natural flavor”.
付晓玲
That ingredient helps to explain not only why the fries taste so good but why most fast food tastes the way it does.
3. Open your refrigerator, your freezer, your kitchen cupboards and look at the labels on our food labels on your food(食物?食品?). You’ll find “natural flavor” or “artificial flavor” in just about every list of ingredients. The similarities between the two broad categories are far more significant than the differences. Both are man-made additives that give most procesd food most of its taste. The canning, freezing, and dehydrating techniques ud in processing destroy most of food’s flavor, and so a vast industry has arin in the United States to make procesd food palatable. Without this flavor industry today’s fast food would not exist.

Imagine you have been chatting for hours on your cellphone and it is running low on power. But instead of looking for the nearest electrical outlet, you recharge the phone with a squirt of clear liquid from a little bottle. That is the vision of Toshiba Corp. and a nu
mber of other Japane electronics companies, which are readying gadgets that will swap their batteries for a long-anticipated alternative energy source: fuel cells. Fuel cells combine hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity, providing power in a way that is potentially cleaner and cheaper than many conventional energy sources.
Unlike batteries, fuel cells generate electricity rather than just store it. They don’t contain the environmentally hazardous metals or chemicals that most batteries do. In fact, fuel cells in theory don’t pollute at all: They combine hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity with only water as exhaust. Toshiba and others are developing fuel cells that run on a type of alcohol called methanol-initially derived from natural gas. Toshiba’s most basic version of the fuel cell is about the size of a cigarette lighter and can be refilled from a bottle when empty. (Wall Street Journal, October 20th, 2005)
