纽约青年警官伊奇博德-克瑞恩自以为是纽约首屈一指的警探，对他不以为然的年长警官们搬出了悬而未结的睡谷无头骑士案措其锐气：除非克瑞恩能将睡谷无头骑士凶杀案查个水落石出，并使凶杀案不再发生，否则其“纽约神探”的称号便名不符实。在众人的激将下，克瑞恩开始向传说中无头骑士经常出没的睡谷进发。
据说无头骑士在美国独立战争时曾是一名骁勇善战的骑士，一次战役中不幸被敌方割去头颅。之后，他的孤魂飘落到了睡谷一带，在月黑风高之夜，他会骑着快马、拿着大斧将经过此地的行人的头颅割下。由于越来越多的人神秘失踪后又被发觉身首异处，睡谷一带开始被称为遍布血腥的“恐怖之谷”。
克瑞恩的到来受到了村民们的欢迎。首富凡-塔赛尔之女卡翠娜对克瑞恩心生爱慕。然而，一向暗恋卡翠娜的青年布罗姆以及卡翠娜的年轻继母却感到极度不安，两人从不同程度上对克瑞恩的侦察行动施以阻力。克瑞恩选择了一位与无头骑士有杀父之仇的年轻人马克作为自己的助手，然而，事情却并非他想像的那样简单……

在《剪刀手爱德华》等片中与伯顿有过三度合作的约翰尼-德普在片中饰演克瑞恩，伯顿认为他最难能可贵的是可以不惜破坏其俊美外形以达到艺术上的真实。饰演卡翠娜的青年女星克里斯蒂娜曾与迪普在《赌城情迷》、《唐尼-布瑞斯科》有过合作。影片开拍前，伯顿曾要求演员们对《尼罗河上的惨案》及多部福尔摩斯探案片观摩，因而演员们的表演如同黑白默片时代的巨星们一样形体及神态演绎极富张力。影片的许多画面都给人童话般的感受，摄影师艾曼纽尔-卢布兹克将画面的色彩处理得很黯淡，他在片中刻意追求的正是黑白片般的恐怖效果。
幕后花絮：
美国著名小说家及历史学家欧文以沉睡谷的故事为基础，创作出了经典作品《沉睡谷传奇》【The Legend of Sleepy Hollow】，从此，这个悬疑恐怖的故事开始广泛流传。这次《沉睡谷》被搬上了大银幕，影片忠实地再现了原著的风采，影片把恐怖、梦幻、浪漫等等非凡的特性混合起来，产生出令人惊心动魄的银幕效果。而这一切，源自于本片的导演好莱坞超级鬼才蒂姆波顿（曾执导著名影片蝙蝠侠的第一、二集）。在擅长处理黑色喜剧的提姆波顿操刀下，本片呈现出一种即浪漫又惊悚的黑色风格。

四年级手抄报"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a short story by Washington Irving contained in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., written while he was living in Birmingham, England, and first published in 1820. With Irving's companion piece "Rip V an Winkle", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is among the earliest examples of American fiction still read today.
The story is t circa 1790 in the Dutch ttlement of Tarry Town, New Y ork, in a cluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" V an Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina V an Tasl, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tasl home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horman, who is suppodly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head". Ichabod mysteriously
disappears from town, leaving Katrina to marry Brom Bones, who was "to look exceedingly knowing
whenever the story of Ichabod was related".
The dénouement of the fictional tale is t at the bridge over the Pocantico River in the area of the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground in Sleepy Hollow. The characters of Ichabod Crane and Katrina V an Tasl may have been bad on local residents known to the author. The character of Katrina is thought to have been bad upon Eleanor V an Tasl Brush, in which ca her name is derived from that of Eleanor's aunt Catriena Ecker V an Tesl.佳句欣赏
Although Irving knew an army colonel named Ichabod Crane from Staten Island, New Y ork (who was also once the Commanding Officer of Lieutenant Stonewall Jackson), the character in "The Legend" may have been patterned after Jes Merwin, who taught at the local schoolhou in Kinderhook, further north along the Hudson River, where Irving spent veral months in 1809.
