MICROSTRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL
NEEDLED C/SiC COMPOSITE

Abstract: A three-dimensional needled carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (3D needled C/SiC) ceramic matrix composite in the through-the-thickness direction was fabricated by the chemical vapor infiltration process. The resulting composite has a bulk density of 2.15g/cm3 and an open porosity of 16%. The adjacent layers for thickness direction in the 3D needled C/SiC composite are inter-linked perfectly together by needling fibers and this greatly improves the interlaminar shear strength of the composite. The interlami-nar shear strength of the 3D needled C/SiC composite is 95MPa (improved 171.4% compared with 2D C/SiC composite, 35MPa), and the tensile strength and flexural strength of the 3D needled C/SiC composite are 159MPa and 350MPa, respectively. The com-posite exhibits a non-brittle failure behavior including propagation and deflection of cracks, fracture and pullout of fibers.

The three-dimensional (3D) needled carbon perform is a novel reinforced body developed in recent years.[1–2] The perform can be prepared with a simple process at low cost, and has excellent performance; particularly, it has high interlaminar shear strength. The perform can be ud to fabricate veral types of composites with differ-ent shapes (i.e., flat, cylindrical, conical, and bell, etc) and various thickness, from 1 to 100mm.[2] As a result, the needled perform has been widely applied to produce carbon fiber reinforced carbon (C/C) and carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites.[1–4] The C/SiC composites have excellent properties such as ex-cellent mechanical properties, good oxidation and abla-tion resistance[5], and excellent braking performance, with a low wear rate and lower nsitivity to surround-ings and oxidation.[4,6–8] The C/SiC composites overcome some disadvantages of C/C composites; therefore, the C/SiC composites have great potential application in ad-vanced braking systems[6–8] and propulsion systems[9–12] such as combustors of scramjets, throat and exit cones for solid rocket nozzles and hot gas valves or large size exit cones for liquid rocket engines.
To improve the interlaminar de-bonding resistance, a needled perform, Noveltex, was developed in France by the SEP (Societe Europeenne de Propulsion, now named Snecma) at the end of the 1970s.[12] Novoltex performs are
