21.(6分)I've just got to talk about this problem I'm having with my postman. It all began a year ago, after the
birth of his first child. Not wanting to appear rude,I asked him about the baby. The next week, not wanting him to think I had asked out of mere politeness the week before. I asked all about the baby again. Now I can't break the habit. I freeze whenever I e him coming. The words "How's the baby"come out on their own. It holds me up. It holds him up. So why can't I stop it The answer is that I want him to like me. Come to think of it,I want everyone to like me.
My sister had the same problem with the caretaker of her block of flats: " All he ever does is complain;he talks at me rather than to me,never listen to a word I say,and yet for some reason I'm always really nice to him. I'm worried in ca I have a difficulty one day,and he won't lift a finger to help. "
What about at work?Richard Lawton,a management trainer, warns: "Tho managers who are actually liked by most of their staff are always tho to whom being liked is not the primary goal. The
qualities that make managers popular are being honest with staff, treating them as human beings and obrving common politeness like saying hello in the morning. "To explain the point,Richard mentions the story of the company chairman who desperately wanted to be liked and who, after making one of his managers fired, said with moist(湿润的)eyes that he was so,so sorry the man was leaving. The employee replied" "If you were that sorry,I wouldn't be leaving. "The lesson being, therefore, that if you try too hard to be liked, people won't like you.
The experts say it all starts in childhood. "If children feel they can only get love from their parents by being good,"says Zelda West-Meads,a marriage guidance consultant,"they develop low lf-confidence and become compulsive (难以抑制的)givers. "But is there anything wrong in being a giver, the world not being exactly short of takers?Anne Cousins believes there is. "There is a point at which giving becomes unhealthy,"she says.
"It comes when you do things for others but feel bad about it. "
I am now trying hard to say to people" I feel uncomfortable about saying this, but. . ",and tell mylf" Refusal of a request does not mean rejection of a person" and I find I can say almost anything to almost anyone.

22.(8分)Rearchers continue to show the power behind our n of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cau uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the rearcher who carried out the review, “more than any other ns, the n of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.”
Smell, which dictates(决定) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our ns. Our nos are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Rearchers Richard Axel and Linda Buc
k were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking rearch on the nature of this extraordinary n. The two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According to one study in the rearch review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road urs. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that the can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.
In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce
drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by rearchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel rearchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different
pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.
1、What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A.The type of food smells.

A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.
B.Every person has a different pattern of genes.

D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
4、What is the passage mainly about?
A.Logic and behavior. B.Smell and its influence.
C.Sen ability and food tastes. D.Olfactory genes and its system.
23.(8分)In the U.S. state of Washington, a road called Interstate 90 cuts through a wild, mountainous area to reach the city of Seattle. For the area's many kinds of animals, the busy highway greatly limits their movements. Crossing 1-90—as the road is called—is a risky but sometimes necessary act. But soon, animals will have a safer choice for crossing the road. They will be able to go above it.
To help the animals, the state is finishing work on its largest-ever wildlife bridge. The 11-meter-tall, 20-meter-wide structure begins in the forest. It forms two arches above the highway, one for each dir
ection of traffic. Workers are adding fencing and plants to help guide the animals across the bridge. Two-meter-thick walls will help block noi from vehicles below.
The 1-90 Bridge is part of a growing number of wildlife crossings across the United States. Some are fences, some are overland bridges, and some are underpass. They all aim to keep drivers and animals away from each other. Collisions between animals and drivers are rarely deadly to people. But they are often deadly to wildlife. In Canada's Banff National Park, studies have found that wildlife crossings reduce the area's animal-driver collisions by 80 percent.
Most of the wildlife bridges are in western states. But experts have noted many other areas that have a need for such paths. Jen Watkins, who organization has helped campaign for animal crossings, says ftind for more crossings is "the number-one barrier."
