In 1884, table tennis first began in England. And then in the early 1900s, it became more and more popular. And in 1926, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was formed, and a tournament, held in London, was designated as the first World Championship. As table tennis became popular all over the world, Asian countries joined the sport and soon became world leaders. Since 1950, the Chine and Japane players have got most of the world titles. Developing the sports was a good way for China to build confidence, show the world its capability and get over the humiliations of the previous century and a half. Table tennis became a role model for the nation, and now, it is still considered as the national sport of the China. So, most Chine people like to play table tennis. In 1971, at the World Championship in Nagoya, Japan, an American ping-pong player, Glenn Cowan, made friends with Zhuang Zeding, a famous Chine player. Photograph of their handshake was published in the Japane newspapers, giving Mao the idea of invited the U.S. team to visit China, to improve the relationship between China and America. The invitation and the visit created a diplomatic wonder. Nixon called this “the week that shook the world.” After 10 months, Nixon visited China. And Mao said this is the “ping-pong diplomacy”. So table tennis has an important place in China. (History of Table Tennis-Ping Pong Diplomacy 1971) (Larry Hodges and Cheng Yinghua, Secrets of
