SENTENCE PROBLEMS IN WRITING
Sentence Fragments
Sentence fragments are incomplete ntences or parts of ntences. Remember that in order to be complete, a ntence must contain (a) at least one main or independent clau, and/or (b) contain at least one main subject and one main verb.
Study the following four examples of ntence fragments and the suggested methods for correcting them.
Fragments
1. Becau some students have part-time jobs in addition to going to school.

3. Having no money and being lonely in the big city.

4. Many people who get married before they are mature enough.

Problem: This is a subordinate clau.
To correct: Attach it to an independent clau.
Complete Sentence:
Becau some students have part-time jobs in addition to full-time class work, they have very little free time.

Problem: No main verb.
To correct: Rewrite the ntence so that it has a subject and a verb.
Complete ntence:
For example, the cost of renting an apartment has incread.
3.
Problem: This is a participial phra. It has no subject or verb.
To correct: (a) Rewrite the phra to include a subject and a verb. (b) Attach the phra to an independent clau.
Complete ntences:
(a) She had no money and was lonely in the big city.
(b) Having no money and being lonely in the big city, the woman committed suicide.

Problem: This is a subordinate (adjective) clau.
To correct: Rewrite the clau by eliminating the adjective clau aspect.

Practice 1: Rewriting Sentence Fragments
Read the following ntences. Mark them FRAG if they are ntence fragments, or Sent if they are complete ntences. Rewrite each fragment to make complete ntences.
1. The desire of all mankind to live in peace and freedom, for example.
2. Second, the fact that men are physically stronger than women.

WRITING PRACTICE
Read the following short essay. Put brackets [ ] around any ntence fragments that you find and mark them FRAG. Then correct all fragments. Rewrite the entire essay.
Women Drivers
Male chauvinism extends even into the area of automobile driving, it ems. Believing that they are far better drivers than women. Men consider women drivers incompetent, inattentive, and even dangerous behind the wheel.
However, statistics prove that women are, in fact, safer drivers than men. For example, insurance rates. Insurance rates for women are 20% lower than for men. Another proof is that more accidents are caud by male drivers between the ages of 18 and 25 than by any other group. Also the greater percentage of accidents involving deaths caud by men. Although women are criticized for being too cautious. They are really just being safe drivers.
The reasons for women drivers’ safer driving habits can perhaps be found in the differing
attitudes of the xes toward automobiles. On the one hand, women drivers who regard the automobile as a convenience. Like a washing machine. On the other hand, men regard the automobile as an extension of their egos. Using it as a weapon when they feel particularly aggressive. Or using it as a status symbol.
In conclusion, women are safer drivers. Becau of their attitude. Men can learn to become safe drivers. If they adopt the attitude that an automobile is merely a convenience.
Choppy Sentences
Choppy ntences are ntences that are too short. They are the result of using too many simple ntences, like tho that follow. Although simple ntences are quite effective sometimes, overu of them is considered poor style in academic writing.
