This document is aimed at assisting people wishing to explore for minerals and coal in Queensland to understand the Government approval process. It also provides references to more detailed information, key government contacts and outlines the regions and mining districts into which Queensland is divided for administrative purpos.

In Queensland, an Exploration Permit is issued for the purpo of exploring for any mineral to which the permit applies, in respect of any land to which the permit applies.
All exploration permits are administered by the Southern Region of the Department of Mines and Energy under the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (the Act).

What does the Act do?
The Act provides for the asssment, development and utilisation of mineral resources to the maximum extent practicable consistent with sound economic and land u management.
The principal objectives of the Act are:
(a)encourage and facilitate prospecting and exploring for and mining of minerals;
(b)enhance knowledge of the mineral resources of the State;
(c)minimize land u conflict with respect to prospecting, exploring and mining;

What does an Exploration Permit entitle me to do?
An exploration permit allows you to undertake a range of bona-fide exploration activities. Activities include geophysical surveys, field mapping, surface sampling, costeaning and drilling (but does not include drilling for water). Bulk sampling requires specific approval and is usually only allowable under a Mineral Development Licence. Production and sale of mineral (mining) is not permitted.
An exploration permit for minerals also entitles you to explore for the existence of uranium however, you should be aware that it is a policy of this Government that it will not grant mining tenure for the purpo of mining uranium in Queensland. Nor will it permit the treatment or processing of uranium in the State.
