Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1933 as the venth child of eight to a father who worked on the railroad and a homemaking mother. He attended the Univers ity of Louisville for both bachelor's and master's degrees, but in 1962 moved to W ashington, D.C., where he lived and had his studio(工作室)for the rest of his life. He became one of the leading artists of the Washington Color School —  a 1950s movement that attached great importance to large fields of color.
He was very interested in freeing his paintings from the limit of canvas(画布)and frames. Instead, in his Drape works of the 1960s, he took unstretched canvas and hung them from ceilings or pinned them in great waterfalls to walls. Each time his work —part painting, part sculpture —was shown in an exhibition, it hung differently, never the same way twice .
In a 2018 Morning Edition profile, Gilliam explained that the intention behind his Drape work was "to develop the idea of movement into shapes" —and that he was inspired by laundry(洗衣店)hanging from a clothes line.
His work is reprented in the collections of some of the world's most celebrated muums, including the Metropolitan Muum of Art and the Muum of Modem A rt in New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Tate Modem in London; and the Mue d'A rt Modeme in Paris. In 2015, he was awarded the U.S. State Department's Medal of A rts Lifetime Achievement A ward.
In the 2018 Morning Edition profile, the then 84-year-old Gilliam said that he felt that he was in his prime, despite health challenges. "I've never felt better in my life. I stopped drinking,

A species of iguana(歇妯)that went extinct nearly 200 years ago on one of the Galapagos Islands appears to be making a comeback, with some help from a team of conrvationists. The last person to spot a Galapagos land iguana on Santiago Island in Ecuador was Charles Darwin in 1835. When an expedition team from California arrived in 1906, the iguanas were nowhere

to be found. And though this kind of iguana can still be found on the other Galapagos Islands, it's believed to have been extinct on Santiago for the past 187 years —until now.
A team of scientists and park guardians discovered new lizards(蚚赐)of various ages while walking the island in late July, which suggests the species has been successfully reintroduced. And according to Jorge Carrion, director of conrvation of the Galapagos Conrvancy , the ecosystem is thriving as a result. The evidence is in the details, he explained. Seeing lizards of different ages and coming across unmarked specimens means the iguanas are
breeding(繁殖)in their natural environment.
Before joining the Galapagos Conrvancy, Carrion worked for the Galapagos National Park Directo rate, the caretakers of the islands'ecosystems and resources. The GNPD is also the authority s pearheading the iguana reintroduction project, with funding and assistance coming from the Conrvancy . He said the collaborative has relead more than 3,000 land iguanas on the i s land s ince January 2019.
Conrvationists decided to reintroduc e the land iguana after carefully considering ho w a return of the species would affect the ecosystem. The li z ards are what's known as an engineering species ,
like the Galapagos giant tortoi , in that they play a key role in keeping a healthy balance in an ecosystem.
"This kind of species are key fo r ecosystem in general," Carrion said . "In this ca it was the justification for the reintroduction of land iguanas, to return the natural dynamic to Santiago Island. When engineer species are not prent, many imbalances occur in the ecosystem."
