5 The Sounds of England
  The sounds of England, the tinkle of the hammer on the anvil in the country smithy, the corncrake on a dewy morning, the sound of the scythe against the whetstone, and the sight of a plough team coming over the brow of a hill, for centuries the one eternal sight of England. The wild anemones in the woods in April, the last load at night of hay being drawn down a lane as the twilight comes on, when you can scarcely distinguish the figures of the hors as they take it home to the farm, and above all, most subtle, most penetrating and most moving, the smell of wood smoke coming up in an autumn evening, the wood smoke that our ancestors, tens of thousands of years ago, must have caught on the air when they were coming home with the results of the day’s forage, when they were still nomads, and they were still roaming the forests and the plains of the continent of Europe. The things strike down into the very depths of our nature, and touch chords that with every year of our life sound a deeper note in our innermost being.

6  The Hou of 1000 Mirrors
Long ago in a small, faraway village, there was a place known as the Hou of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the hou. He looked throug

To his great surpri, he found himlf staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his.   In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the hou. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to e 1000 little dogs growling back at him. 7  The Smile
  I was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I [1] fumbled in my pockets to e if there were any cigarettes, which had [2] escaped their arch. I found one and becau of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches , they had taken tho. I looked through the bars at my jailer. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him Have you got a light? He looked at me, [3]shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came clo and lit the match, his eyes inadvertently locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn’t want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and generated a smile on his lips, too. He
lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.
  Do you have kids? he asked. Yes, here, here. I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes filled with tears. I said that I feared that I’d never e my family again, never have the chance to e them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the jail, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he relead me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.
  My life was saved by a smile. Yes, the smilethe unaffected, unplanned, natural connection between people. I really believe that if that part of you and that part of me could recognize each other, we wouldn’t be enemies. We couldn’t have hate or envy or fear.
