WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 12” x 15” white sulphite paper
OR black sulphite paper Hearts cut out of white paper (3
per student)
Heart cut from watercolor paper
(1 per student)
Glue
Optional: texture rollers & tools
Station #1:
Liquid watercolors (red, purple,
blue, etc.) & salt
Water containers & brushes Oil pastels or metallic Sharpies
Station #2:
Mod Podge or liquid starch
Tissue paper
Flat brushes Glitter
Station #3:
Liquid tempera (white, red, lime
green, yellow & metallic) Paint brushes
Station #4:
Liquid tempera
Paint brushes Sequins, buttons, etc.
Inspired by Valentine’s Day, I pulled out my file on Jim Dine and created this multi-step collage project for my cond graders.
I ud a station-method of attack with this lesson. I t up a different art lesson/technique at each table: oil pastel resist with watercolor, metallic paint, sparkles and glitter, and tissue paper collage. Lots of movement and activity, but worth the effort!

STATION 1: Watercolor Resist
To begin, a child finds a at and writes his name on the piece of 12″ x 15″ white paper t at the table.
TIP: You could also do this project with black sulphite paper if you don’t have time to make the background later. It creates a striking contrast against the colorful hearts.
This paper then becomes the tray. They will u this tray to carry around the different hearts they will soon make, then the tray will become the background paper in the next step.
At this table, the children u their watercolor paper heart and color it with oil pastels. I encourage them to make patterns, flowers, hearts, circles, etc.
Then they wash watercolor paint over the heart. Have the kids place their finished
watercolor heart on their “tray” and move
to the next station.
Sprinkle salt over the wet paint for interesting e ffects
STATION 2:Tissue Paper Collage
Using scraps of tissue paper, kids brush
on either liquid starch or Mod Podge
(watered down) on their paper heart to
moisten.
Then add layers of tissue paper, brushing
each one flat.
TIP:
拥抱月亮的太阳It’s fun for the teacher or an adult to carry
around a jar of glitter. As the kids finish, a
sprinkling of glitter can be added to the
wet heart. So pretty!
OPTION:
You could also include doilies
or other Valentine’s day craft
materials you have on hand
instead of tissue paper
STATION 3:Metallic Patterns
Set out a tray of regular tempera paint in
white, red, lime green and yellow.
In another tray, t out metallic tempera
paint in gold, silver or bronze OR metallic
oil pastels.
Show the kids how they can mix the
metallic paint with the regular paint,
swirling and blending, splattering or
dabbing.

You could also color the heart with a
metallic oil pastel. Then, pick one color
to paint over the coloring.
Using the back of the brush, scratch姜葱花甲
patterns and designs to reveal the
metallic color underneath.
STATION 4:Mixed Media
Set out a tray of tempera paint and trays of
buttons, quins, yarn etc. Anything you have

around the art room would work for this
random collage.
Let the kid’s personal expression come
through, with no specific direction. Let them
create.
For me, this marked the end of part 1…I
know, what a mess! Finishing up…
Using the white paper “tray” from the last class, have the
kids stack their now dry hearts into a pile and t aside.
Painting the paper is fun and can be done in many ways. I
t out texture rollers and trays of lime green and pink
鄂尔多斯景点paint. The kids rolled their favorite color on the paper,
making sure to roll all the way to the edges.
Next, I t small tubs of red and purple paint on the
table. Using small brushes, I have the kids make small jelly
bean shaped dots, hearts, swirls or anything they want on
the background. Glue hearts to background.
