Once in the hoary ages in the Ravine of Lungmen stood a Kiri tree, a veritable king of the forest. It reared its head to talk to the stars; its roots struck deep into the earth, mingling their bronzed coils with tho of the silver dragon that slept beneath. And it came to pass that a mighty wizard made of this tree a wondrous harp, who stubborn spirit should be tamed but by the greatest of musicians. For long the instrument was treasured by the Emperor of China, but all in vain were the efforts of tho who in turn tried to draw melody from its strings. In respon to their utmost strivings there came from the harp but harsh notes of disdain, ill-according with the songs they fain would sing. The harp refud to recogni a master.
太古时代,龙门峡谷有泡桐树一棵,乃林中树王。它竖起枝桠,能与星辰对语,其根深探地
底,青铜似的卷曲根须与沉睡银龙的虬髯,交错纠缠。一日,有一法术高超的道人将其做成一把神妙之琴,但此琴有灵,桀骜不驯,唯有最强大的乐师才能驯服。长久以来,中国皇帝将此琴视若珍宝,诸多乐师试图在它弦上奏出妙音,但一切努力都枉费心力,皆是徒劳。琴只是发出轻蔑的刺耳音调,咿呀呲啦一番,根本不屑与他们口中之曲和谐一致——琴拒绝指认它的琴师。
At last came Peiwoh, the prince of harpists. With tender hand he caresd the harp as one might ek to soothe an unruly hor, and softly touched the chords. He sang of nature and the asons, of high mountains and flowing waters, and all the memories of the tree awoke! Once more the sweet breath of spring played amidst its branches. The young cataracts, as they danced down the ravine, laughed to the budding flowers. Anon were heard the dreamy voices of summer with its myriad incts, the gentle pattering of rain, the wail of the cuckoo. Hark! a tiger roars,--the valley answers again. It is autumn; in the dert night, sharp like a sword gleams the moon upon the frosted grass. Now winter reigns, and through the snow-filled air swirl flocks of swans and rattling hailstones beat upon the boughs with fierce delight.
终于,琴界俊才伯牙出现了。他轻抚琴身,如抚烈马一匹,而后轻柔触动其弦。他吟咏自然四季,高山流水,唤醒了树王所有记忆!春的甜蜜气息再度嬉戏枝间;溪流汇成瀑布,蜒转山谷,欢悦奔走,对蓓蕾初生的花朵展开笑魇。倏然间,夏日的梦幻音调流至耳畔,那是夏虫鸣唱,雨声淅沥,杜鹃悲啼。听,有虎长啸,山谷作答。入秋,夜晚凄清,草野结霜,皓月当空,恰如剑光,锐利分明。最后,冬临大地,雪花绽放,野雁盘旋,冰雹击枝,其声爽利。
Then Peiwoh changed the key and sang of love. The forest swayed like an ardent swain deep lost in thought. On high, like a haughty maiden, swept a cloud bright and fair; but passing, trailed long shadows on the ground, black like despair. Again the mode was changed; Peiwoh sang of war, of clashing steel and trampling steeds. And in the harp aro the tempest of Lungmen, the dragon rode the lightning, the thundering avalanche crashed through the hills. In ecstasy the Celestial monarch asked Peiwoh whereinlay the cret of his victory. "Sire," he replied, "others have failed becau they sang but of themlves. I left the harp to choo its theme, and knew not truly whether the harp had been Peiwoh or Peiwoh were the harp."
然后调子一转,伯牙转而歌咏爱情。森林摇摆,如热切的情郎迷失于他的思恋。高空之上,云朵光明亮丽,如骄矜的少女拂略而过,而后消逝不见,唯见地上长长的阴影,绝望般漆黑。调子再变,伯牙接着歌唱战争,歌唱刀光剑影,战马嘶鸣。一场风暴从琴弦上流出,席卷了龙门;银龙腾云驾雾,穿梭于闪电之间,势不可挡的雷鸣,足以使山崩地裂。听闻此曲,皇帝大喜,忙问伯牙驯琴的秘诀。“殿下,”伯牙答道,“其他乐师急于奏出自我的歌曲,而我则由琴选取它自己的主题。事实上,鼓琴之时,究竟是琴成了伯牙,还是伯牙成了琴,恐怕连伯牙自己也分辨不清了。”
This story well illustrates the mystery of art appreciation. The masterpiece is a symphony played upon our finest feelings. True art is Peiwoh, and we the harp of Lungmen. At the magic touch of the beautiful the cret chords of our being are awakened, we vibrate and thrill in respon to its call. Mind speaks to mind.We listen to the unspoken, we gaze upon the unen. The master calls forth notes we know not of. Memories long forgotten all come back to us with a new significance. Hopes stifled by fear, yearnings that we dare not recogni, stand forth in new glory. The sympathetic communion of minds necessary for art appreciation must be bad on mutual concession. The spectator must cultivate the proper attitude for receiving the message, as the artist must know how to impart it. It is to be deplored that so few of us really take pains to study the moods of the masters. In our stubborn ignorance we refu to render them this simple courtesy, and thus often miss the rich repast of beauty spread before our very eyes. A master has always something to offer, while we go hungry solely becau of our own lack of appreciation.
