The Spring of Science
Written by Guo Moruo

Ladies and Gentlemen,
茄子烧土豆 I would like to give my wholehearted support and warm applau to the important speech made respectively by our wi leader, Chairman Hua Guofeng and our esteemed Vice Chairman Deng Xiaoping, and the report made by Comrade Fang Yi. The most magnificent spring of science, which the history of Chine nation has never witnesd, has come. As a man born in the last century who was invited to such a grand meeting, I’m overwhelmed by all sorts of feelings now.
煲汤食材In the old dark days before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, how many
people who undertook the science work dreamed of the prosperity of the country, the rejuvenation of the nation and the flourishing of science and culture! However, no social status the scientists could share, and no way out they could find. The treatment science received in tho days was nothing but destruction and degradation from the feudal dynasties, from the Northern Warlords, and from Kuomintang reactionaries. Even people like me who participated in the May 4th Movement in 1919 and have put forward the slogan of “developing science” found their efforts in vain. A large number of people with noble ideals, filled with grief, indignation and bitterness, found themlves heroes with no place to display their prowess ---- they could not do what they wanted to achieve. Many of them struggled bitterly and spent most part of their life in the dark days, penniless and homeless. Fortunately, under the leadership of Chairman Mao Zedong, the great leader and tutor, after arduous struggle, the Chine Communist Party established the new China in which the people were liberated and so was science. Furthermore, Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou Enlai have designed a splendid blueprint for the construction of the country into a strong socialist modernized one, and given meticulous concern to scien
ce development and science workers. As a result, science in the country has gained huge development since then. When I recall the past events, one by one, they all emerge in my mind as if they were right here before me. When enjoying the freshness of water one would think of its source. How could we not feel indebted to and cherish the memory of the great leader Chairman Mao and the esteemed Premier Zhou! The evil “Four Gang” devastated science work viciously and procuted science workers mercilessly in an attempt to bring our homeland back to the old society of ignorance, backwardness and darkness. But how could a little worm have a tree shake! Led by Chairman Hua, the Party Central Committee eradicated the vicious “worms” that had brought calamity to the country and its people, giving the people a cond liberation. Now we can say proudly and elatedly: Gone are the days when the reactionaries devastated science work and coming is the spring of science. Recalling my whole life, I come to realize a truth that is unquestionably true: only socialism can liberate science and only bad on science can socialism be constructed. Science needs socialism and socialism in turn needs science. What happens today in china is gratifying. When I think of this, all sorts of feelings are we
ll up in my mind, and I feel extremely excited. “The old man chants at dusk with a feeling of joy, he es the green mountain bright in the evening glow.” The glorious poem written by the esteemed Vice Chairman Ye Jianying completely reprents the feelings of people of my generation.
In the history of human civilization development, the Chine nation has made outstanding contributions. Now, under the leadership of the Communist Party, our nation is undergoing great rejuvenation. On mentioning the Renaissance in Europe in the 16二班班徽>意义非凡的近义词th century, Engles once said that this was a time which needed giants and did create giants. Likewi, today, in the time of socialism, the great revolution and construction of the socialist China needs, to a much higher degree, a large number of giants. We need giants not only in politics and culture, but also in science and other fields. We believe that such giants are sure to emerge in large numbers.
ps基础入门Science is practical learning, which tolerates no falness and demands tremendous efforts. Meanwhile, it also demands creation and fantasy. Only fantasy can cut off the bou
nd of the tradition and develop science. Ladies and gentlemen doing science work! Don’t let poets take advantage of fantasy alone. Via science, many fantasies in ancient China have come true. Such fantasies includes, for example, the one in which the lady Chang E who swallowed elixir stolen from her husband flew to the moon, the one in which Monkey Sun, the famous hero in one of the Chine classic mythical novels, dove into the “dragon’s palace ” in the deep water to arch for treasures, and tho described in The List of Conferred Gods, another Chine classic mythical novel. The great astronomer Kobany (孕早期运动哥白尼) said man’s bounden duty lay in the bold eking of truth. Chine people have been bold in exploration, creation and revolution all through the ages. We must break with convention and chop a way through difficulties for the development of science in China. It is characteristic of science workers both to indulge in the wildest fantasy and ek truth from facts. Let’s ek the infinite truth in the boundless space!
May the science workers of the old generation be healthy and vigorous. May they make new achievements for the country’s science development and make significant contributions to the cultivation of new talents in science in the cour of the new round of
“Long March ” (a major strategic movement of the Chine Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army which succeeded in reaching the revolutionary ba in northern Shaanxi after traversing 11 provinces and covering 12,500 kilometres, 1934-1935) under the leadership of Chairman Hua.
May the science workers of the middle generation, with courage and vigour, go all out to reach the peak of the world science. They are the backbones on which the country depends to catch up with and surpass the world advanced scientific levels; hence the burden on them is heavy and the road is long. Even people in ancient China could study so diligently that someone had his head hung to a beam and an awl placed below his hip in order to keep himlf from falling asleep while studying. The science workers of the middle generation today should be more hardworking and more absorbed in study and overcoming difficulties for the sake of the lofty ideal of communism. What is crucial in catching up with and surpassing the world advanced scientific levels is time. Time is life, time is speed, and time is strength. Take advantage of your youth and vigour, and make more contributions to the people!
May the teenagers all over the country resolve to be devoted to the lofty cau of communism since childhood. May they t up the revolutionary ideal and have a good command of modern science and technology. May they feel proud of hardworking and disgraced for not enterprising. They are the sun at dawn, on whom the hope of the nation rests. Revolution plus science will make their might redoubled, like a tiger that has grown wings, and enable them to take over and pass on the torch ignited by both the revolutionists and scientists of the old generation, whom they learn from and outdo.
The speech I make is not so much the heartfelt wishes of an old science worker as the anticipation to a master work This is a historic master work of great significance, the continuous creation of which needs the joint efforts of all the science workers and all the peoples. It is not written on the limited sheets of paper, but in the boundless space. The Spring Equinox (the 4th solar term according to the Chine lunar calendar) has just past by, and Pure Brightness (the 5th solar term according to the Chine lunar calendar) is around the corner; spring now lingers here in the country. There is an ancient Chine po
em describing the beauty of spring, in which it says: “The riverside flowers in the morning sunlight are redder than flame; the water of the river in spring is as green as cymbidium.” This is the spring of revolution, of the people, and of science. Let’s open our arms and give a warm embrace to it!
