Al was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador (厄瓜多尔) in 1951. He moved to New York in 1960, and he started in the 3rd grade and spoke no English. He overcame a lot of difficulties in his studies, and later he spoke English quite well.
After leaving college, he worked in the New York City Fire Department in 1977 and was assigned (指派) to Engine 1 in midtown Manhattan. In 1996 Al turned captain becau of his hard work.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Al was working to rescue people after the 1st falling of the South Tower in the World Trade Center and was caught in the 2nd falling of the North Tower. He was buried for more than an hour, then rescued and taken to Jery City Medical Center.
