To us it ems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually
the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first u was as a shade (遮光

By the 18th century, the umbrella was ud against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrella have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the 20th century that women's umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colours.

In the United States, 30 percent of the grown-up population has a" weight problem". To many
people, the cau is clear: we eat too much. But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they
ate more food. In tho days people worked harder physically, walked more, ud machines much

Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some rearch work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office
