Christmas at the mountain clinic would have to wait. The banks beside Mary Breckinridge’s clinic were ruined after a heavy rain. She had to find a way to get her five patients to the hospital in Lexington.
With a neighbor’s help, Mary and the nurs built a boat. They named it Ambulance, and on the morning of December 30, 1926, Mary, another nur, and the patients t off down the river. After sixteen wild miles on the dangerous river, they arrived at the train station in Krypton. As she watched the train pull away with her patients safely on board, Mary smiled and waved.
Mary had not planned to be a nur. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky politician. As a child, Mary was influenced by her family who had always been concerned about the poorer people of the state. When she grew up, Mary was inspired to become a nur. So in 1925 Mary hired a few British-trained nurs and, with some money from her family, started the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky.
Before Mary and her nurs came, the mountain people lived a hard life. Families made so little money that they could not afford doctors or medicine. Many children had dias and nearly every
person was malnourished for lack of food.
Mary and the nurs built clinics and a small hospital deep in the forests of Leslie County. There were no paved roads, electricity, or telephones. Each day the nurs rode on horback to outlying farms, often in bad weather, to answer calls for help. They worked hard to keep an eye on their patients.
To the grateful mountain people, Mary and the nurs emed to be everywhere. They treated everything from cut fingers to pneumonia(肺炎), gave shots, and delivered babies. The proud countrymen liked the nurs becau they treated everyone with respect.
The Frontier Nursing Service grew. Today their Nursing Service reaches far beyond the Kentucky mountains. Medical professionals from all over the world come to Wendover to study rural health care in action. When the men and women go back to their own countries, they are prepared to help people in need.

Today tropical rainforests are disappearing from the face of the globe. Despite growing international concern, rainforests continue to be destroyed at a pace over 80,000 acres per day. World rainforest cover now stands at around 2.5million square miles. Human activities have had an effect on much of this remaining area.
Deforestation(森林滥伐) of tropical rainforests has a global effect on species extinction, the loss of important ecosystem rvices and renewable resources, and the reduction of carbon sinks. However, this destruction can be slowed, stopped, and in some cas even reverd(逆转). Most people agree that the problem must be solved, but the means are not as simple as building fences around the remaining rainforests or banning the wood trade. Economic, political, and social pressures will not allow rainforests to continue to exist if they are completely clod off from u and development.
So, what should be done? The solution must be bad on what is practical, not completely idealistic and depends on developing a conrvation approach built on the principle of
sustainable(可持续的) u and development of rainforests. Beyond the responsible development of rainforests, efforts to restore damaged forest lands along with the establishment of protected areas are key to curing rainforests for the long-term benefits they can provide for mankind.
Historic approaches to rainforest conrvation have failed, as shown by the incread rate of deforestation. In many regions, closing off forests as untouchable parks and rerves has neither improved the quality of living or economic opportunities for the rural poor, nor stopped forest clearing by illegal woodcutters and developers.
The problem with this traditional approach to prerving wildlands in developing countries is that it fails to develop proper economic motives for prerving the forest. Local people and the government itlf must e financial returns to prove the costs of maintaining parks from economic activities.

Brain imaging was once thought to be too costly and difficult for widespread u in the developing world. But the technology soon may be available in poor countries. Brain imaging creates pictures of brain activity. It us infrared light similar to the light produced by a television remote control. Brain imaging can identify the first signs of cognitive( 认知的)delays, mental problems in newborns and young children. Such children could be suffering from a poor diet.
The technology has a long name - functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or f-N-I-R-S. It involves placing an extremely small, soft helmet around a baby's head. Infrared light is nt through the bone protecting the brain. It helps to show whether babies are developing normally for their age.
This technology is considered safer than other imaging methods, including MRI or PET scan. And it also can be easily moved. The brain scanner equipment can be loaded into a vehicle. Health workers can drive it from village to village.
Clare Elwell is a professor of medical physics at University College London. She helped develop the relatively low-cost, non-aggressive imaging technology. She says the device measures oxygen in the blood to learn how babies' brains are developing.
"And as you u different areas of your brain, you direct oxygen to tho different brain areas. And so if we look at the change in the distribution of the oxygen in your brain, we can work out how active your brain is and what your brain is actually processing."
Clare Elwell led a study of the testing method in rural Gambia. The babies involved were between four and eight months old. They were examined three times over 15 months. Rearchers noted the babies' reactions to different images and sounds. She says poor nutrition and childhood dias threaten the African children. She says the goal is to identify babies needing to be better fed or treated for health problems that can harm brain development.
