-‖'. 、;﹑…As the development of English, the usage of which is changing conquently. At the beginning of it, people, especially the high-educated , pay more attention on the “standard” English, that is to say, it is of great importance to speak or write “right” English. It refers to a language ur`s underlying knowledge about the system of rules, which is called linguistic competence propod by famous linguist Chomsky. Nevertheless, language itlf is changing with the change of society. Nowadays, people pay more attention on efficiency and practice, so does language. It becomes more and more conci and direct. It is not ubiquitous to e “ntences” like “good morning” and “no nearing” which are obviously of no predicate verb as well as subject. So, are the expressions grammatically wrong or pragmatically right? In order to analyze this question, I will prent the following aspects.
Ⅰ.Verbless ntences and pragmatics
There are two elementary definition about ntence from the point of grammar: (a) A ntence is a group of words expressing a complete thought.(b)A ntence is a group of words containing a subject & predicate. However, verbless ntence is really widely accept联通积分怎么兑换话费
ed and ud across the world. In our daily life, people pay more attention on the meaning conveying itlf, but not the so-called standard grammatically right ntence。Thus verbless ntence appears accordingly。
Pragmatics can be defined in a various way。A general definition is that it is the study of how speakers of a language u ntences to effct successful communication。The process of communication is esntially a process of conveying and understanding meaning in a certain context。Pragmatics is a comparatively new branch of study in the 1960s and 1970s resulted mainly from the expansion of the study of linguistics, especially that of mantics。Verbless ntence and pragmatics are of clo relation。The reasons lying follow:firstly, both verbless ntence and pragmatics pay more attention on meaning ;condly, they will not be expressible if not in a certain context, i.e,contextualist view, which places the study of meaning in the context in which language is ud;thirdly, pragmatics and verbless ntence obey the maxim of quantity of Coopperative Principle propod by Grice. Becau it convey the information accurately, not overstated or lessstated。Besides,it is accord with the maxim of manne
r,which requires brevity。For example:
含羞草的秘密 A: Did you finish your homework?保胃胶囊>壁挂式洗衣机
B: Yes, I did.
腌鱼的制作方法
看圣经 B; Yes, I finished my homework..
B1 and B2 answer the question A propod, but shows brevity and good manner, while shows rudeness and impatience. Of cour, sometimes, verbless ntence can not replace the common ntence. For example:
