本文运用女性主义的分析方法,从两个不同角度对伊迪丝·沃顿(1862—1937)的两个短篇小说《另两个》和《另一个时代》进行了分析。通过对女性及其处境的分析,揭示_『女性受到的外部压迫和女性被置于“他者”的悲惨境遇。文章还进一步分析女性受压迫的根源是其经济上对男性的依赖,解决
女性问题的第一步是使她们成为经济独立的“新女性”。
文章由四章构成。
第一章介绍部分首先说明了对沃顿的研究综述,包括当今女性丰义评论家对其作品的研究情况,以及本论文的概要介绍。
第二章详细研究了短篇小说《另两个》中的人物及其所处的境遇。通过爱丽丝第三任丈夫之眼,读者看到了爱丽丝形象由“房间里的天使”到“奇特异形的鬼怪”的变化的全过程。天使和魔鬼,这两种女性形象是为了满足男性欲望而被扭曲了的女性的集中体现,说明了男权社会中女性被置于由男性窥视、赏玩、品评的境遇,展现了女性话语权、行为反抗权被剥夺的事实。
第三章分析’r《另一个时代》中追求个性自由和理想生活而离婚后终为社会排斥而流亡欧洲的丽德考特夫人的故事。本章展示了她内外在世界的冲突和所遭受到的包括来自朋友,女儿,爱人的歧视和压迫。虽然她的离婚选择可算是一种孤独的自我体现行为,但该决定本身并不能带来成功和幸福,因为在男权至上的社会她的命运本该如此。
第四章结论部分对沃顿短篇小说中丰富的女性主义内涵进行了客观评价。从女性主义的视角,我们发现沃顿夫人通过反复出现的婚姻主题和深入研讨的女性问题对男权社会中女人沦为从属地位的悲惨处
境的进行了敏锐探索。在前面论述的基础上,该部分还指出女性受压迫的根源是经济上对男人的依赖,解决女性问题的第一步是使她们成为经济独立的“新女性”。作为对这些问题的探索者,沃顿应被视为“新女性”的先驱和女性主义的先知之一。
