Art as Technique
Seemingly, it is not difficult to give a summerization on Victor Shklovsky’s “Art as Technique”, that is, when perception becomes hatibual, it becomes automatized, and finally devours life, while art is to recover the nsation of life through defamiliarization and prolonging the process of perception.
简历证件照The essay begins with the famous dictum, “Art is thinking in images.” The timeworn notion that art is characterized by the u of images fails to address the major feature of art, which is not to be found in its content but its form. One of Shklovsky’s major contentions is that poetic language is fundamentally different from the language that we u everyday. What makes art is not the “image,” or the idea, which can easily be expresd in prosaic form just as well as in poetic form. This difference is the artist’s technique, which is the key to the creation of art. The artist creates a shift in the normal, anticipated form of perception and by doing so reveals the world anew. 小鸡顿蘑菇

This automatic u of language, or “over-automatization” as Shklovsky refers to it, caus the idea or meaning to “function as though by formula” . This distinction between artistic language and everyday language, is the distinguishing characteristic of all art. He invented the term defamiliarization to “distinguish poetic from practical language on the basis of the former’s perceptibility”.
The concept of “defamiliarization”, the basic function of all device, is perhaps the best known concept introduced in this essay. “Art is conceived as a way of breaking down automatism in perception”. The purpoof art is to impart the nsation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. He argues for the need to turn something that has become over-familiar into something new. According to Shklovsky, the technique of art is meant to make objects “unfamiliar”, to make forms difficult, to challenge the reader’s (or the viewer) expectations and jar their nsibilities. As a conquence, the reader is force to experience the ordinary in new ways through the u of artistic language. The reason why the tecnique has to increa the difficulty and length of percption is that the p
rocess of perception is an aesthetic end in itlf and must be prolonged. A work is created “artistically” so that its perception is impeded and the greatest possible effect is produced through the slowness of the perception.
The question is, what is Shklovsky arguing against? He is arguing against the law of the economy of creative effort, which, he holds, might be true to practical language but not to poetic language. And defamiliarization transforms parctical language into poetic language. However, in his essay, he doesn’t tell whether Potebnya or anyone el advocates the economy of creative effort in poetry.思想情况怎么写
