thatIknewherfromthegardenshehadsolovinglymadeovermanydecades.

Thehoushelivedinliestwomilesfrommine–asimple,two-storystructure

withtheboxyplan,steeply-pitchedroofandunadornedlinesthataretypicalof

housbuiltinthemiddleofthenineteenthcenturyneartheNewJeryshore.

middle-sizedonesinthemiddle,withoccasionalexceptionsfordramaticaccent.

Inhergarden,everythingwasaccent,everythingwastall,andtheevidence

wasplainthatshelovedthreekindsofplantandthreeonly:ros,clematisandlilies,

intermingledpromiscuouslytopleasanteffectbutnoapparentdesign.

treeinherfrontyardsickenedanddied,andwhenacoastalgale

struck,thebranchesthatfellwereneverremoved.

uninvitedthingsthreatenthefewliliesandclematisandrosthatstillstrugglefor

survival.

fpaintersarrivedandsomeonecutdownthedeadelmtree.

rosandclematisandlilieswilletoitthatallelisputasideuntilthatflower
