Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is one of the most remarkable and distinguished American romantic writers in the 19th century. He was born in July, 1804 in Salem, Massachutts. His family
members are devout puritans, who puritan thoughts exerted a great influence on Hawthorne’s mind. We can find the
puritan thought of original sin, total depravity, limited atonement and others described in his works. The thoughts were deeply rooted in Hawthorne’s mind. That is the reason why Hawthorne devotes himlf to the creation of moral and allegorical novels.

Thus, he is good at analyzing human being’s inner heart. Hawthorne pays special attention to the exploration of problems like morality and sin. He strongly advocated that human beings can receive salvation by means of good deeds and lf confession in order to wash away sins and purify hearts. Nevertheless, Hawthorne does not all describe the dark side. At t he same time of exposing social evils and human beings’ deeply-rooted bad habits, Hawthorne shows his great sympathy for many kind-hearted people. Just as another American writer Herman Melville point that the darkness described by Hawthorne makes daybreak, which moves forward in darkness, brighter (Shu, 2007, P5). Hawthorne’s works are characterized by rich imaginations and well-organized structure. 3.1 Symbol
A symbol is something such as an object, picture, written word, sound, or particular mark that reprent something el by association, remblance, or

4.1 Symbolic meaning of names
We can e that the title of this novel is Young Goodman Brown. What is the author’s intention by using a word “young” in front of his name? Of cour, Hawthorne has his own writing intentions. Y oung means that Brown is still inexperienced and immature. He has not enough awareness of the world of evil and sin. Nevertheless, after he takes part in the gathering in a dark forest, he said: “My Faith is gone……There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name.” (Hawthorne, 30) After finding put that everyone is untrustworthy, including his wife. Brown becomes “a stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate man.” (Hawthorne, 1999: 44) Brown is disheartened and he los faith in everyone and his own life. His personality of weak-minded, inexperienced and immature is thus revealed through the word “young”. After the meeting in the forest, Brown leads a desperate, gloomy life for the rest of his life.
The word “Goodman” means that Brown is a pure and innocen t young man to begin with. He is a good-natured person. Unable to avoid temptations of the devil, Goodman Brown insists on leaving his wife for the prent and goes to take part in a gathering in the forest. It is just like other human beings in the world who cannot avoid temptations of various evils. How to face with the temptations is the key point of testing human nature. When Brown arrives at the gathering, he finds

His good nature is greatly challenged by the outside evils. Therefore, the word “Goodman”symbolizes the transformation of a good-natured person to an experienced person. Hawthorne us the name Goodman to show the innocence, purity and inexperience in human nature. Before the journey, Brown is an inexperienced young man. He holds an active and optimistic attitude towards life. All the undergo changes when he takes part in the meeting in the forest. During his journey, he comes across an old man, who symbolizes evil. Being tempted by him, Brown finally participates the meeting. There, he es many emingly kind-hearted people in the town. They turn to be hypocritical deep in their heart. Brown is so shocked and disheartened upon eing this scene. After the meeting, Brown becomes gloomy, experienced and skeptical. Pure Brown is not innocent any more. He grows mature in a short time. Despite this kind of mature is horrible, mirable and sad, it is
