ERIK ERIKSON
Erik Erikson was one of an influential psychologist. He is a well-known person for his contributions in psychology field. He had developed psychosocial theory of personality development, which made him become the father of contemporary psych-biographical rearch. His concept of identity crisis has also influenced many people in the educational field. Becau of his efforts, people started to focus more and more on the children’s education and their social development. Erik Erikson is extremely influential in educational field.
The early life of Erikson was not perfect satisfactory for him. In fact, he was very upt and was struggling about his identity during his childhood. Erik Erikson was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 12, 1902 and died on May 12, 1994. His father had abandoned his mother Karla Abrahamn, a Danish Jew, before Erikson’s birth.东湖港 At age three of Erikson, his mother remarried to Dr. Theodore Homburger who was Erikson’s pediatrician. However, Erikson’s parents kept him ignorant of his birth father, and becau of the fact that his parents lied to him, he was very angry when the truth is revealed. Although Erikson’s friends tead him for being a Jew and Nordic during his chi
ldhood, he developed good competence in art and language in which helped his further study in psychology. Erikson’s early life had a strong impact on his theory development.
It was in his adulthood, Erikson’s life changed. After his high school, Erikson enrolled in
日本十大妖刀an art school, and soon he became an artist. According to William R. Yount, it was becau of Erikson’s reputation as artist, he was invited to a villa in Vienna, Austria, to paint a child’s portrait, and he met Sigmund Freud and became Freud’s student. After then, he went to a psychoanalytic institute and began his study as a child psychoanalyst. Anna Freud founded Erik Erikson, being both a teacher and artist, while he was work with children, and she conducted Erikson’s training in psychoanalysis. She also had a strong influence on Erikson’s theory development. The famous educator Eua L. Essa once stated during Erikson’s adulthood as follower of Sigmund Freud, “Erikson refined aspects of Freud’s theory into his psychosocial theory.” Erikson is indeed outstanding for his great accomplishments in psychology field. In the later time after finished studying in Vienna, Erikson immigrated to the United States becau of the ri of Hitler. Later, he taught and
further studied at Yale University and the University of California at different times. According to William R. Yount, in 1950 Erikson published his first book, Childhood and Society, “in which he introduced Eight Ages of Man.”, and some other books later. Erikson’s contribution is immen in educational psychology.
Erikson’s psychosocial theory of personality development has a strong stand in psychology field as well. His theory provided basis of studying human personality. He believed Freud’s theory was too narrow in which Freud only focud on the first six years of age. Therefore, Erikson refined his theory and produced a border and balanced stages include childhood, adolescence and adulthood in account. He emphasized on “vital involvement”, meaning “the development of personality as a result of interaction between the individual (psyche-) and the environment (social),” related by William R. Yount. The social environment has great effect on children’s personality development. He perceived there are eight stages of personality development, and each stage had a healthy direction and an unhealthy direction. The stages are trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus r
ole confusion, intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and integrity versus despair. According to Wendy Sharkey, a scholar and writer in education field, Erikson believed that human develop the stages throughout life span. From Childhood through adolescence, into adulthood, humans at each stage are developing a character or strength that will help them to end up with a healthy personality. Robert F. Biehler and Jack Snowman, scholars in Southern Illinois University, stated in their book Psychology Applied to Teaching that, “He [Erikson] emphasizes that people adapt to their world best when they posss both the positive and negative qualities of a particular stage provided the positive quality is significantly stronger than the negative quality.” The qualities are produced as hope, will, purpo, competence, fidelity, love, care and wisdom in this ca. He believed that in order to proceed to next stage or have a healthy personality through one’s life, the qualities are esntial as well. His theory on personality development is quite influential at times, and many scholars started to study on his view.
