Abstract:Anti-colonialism as a historical phenomenon defies easy categorization.Due to the ubiquity of anti-colonial thought and activism across time and geography,anti-colonialism has been widely ud as an expression across a range of academic disciplines,but it resists simple definitions of practical form,political scope,and empirical content. Yet,more often than not,it has primarily rved as a generic rhetorical device to describe that which is against colonialism.Drawing upon its longstanding political u,the anthropologist David Scott has provided one provisional approach for t
hinking about anti-colonialism as a specific concept,writing that Anticolonialism has been a classic instance of the modern longing for total revolution. In this n,anti-colonialism be-longs to a European Enlightenment tradition of radical thought and activ-ism an intellectual genealogy that,while valid in a number of in-stances,nevertheless positions anti-colonialism as derivative of Western political thought to the neglect of non-Western sources.This paper us this critique as a point of departure.Anti-colonialism must be recognized as a significant phenomenon in defining the political history of the mod-ern world,but it also must be considered in many cas as indiscrete from the colonialism it confronted.Anti-colonialism has been multilayered and syncretic,consisting of local indigenous elements in addition to a-dopted foreign features to the point that the prefix anti-must be quali-fied.Current scholarship has demonstrated that political resistance appro-priated the ideas and techniques of ruling countries to make claims for political reform and lf-determination.As with other social process and phenomena,anti-colonialism was not static,either as a practice or a concept,but subject to changing historical conditions across time and place even after decolonization.This paper will examine the issues.
